Overview
I believe that all students learn best in an environment they feel safe in. When they trust the teachers, classmates, admin and staff, they have a better chance at being successful and reaching their full potential in school. As a counselor and leader in my school community, it is my responsibility to dismantle institutional racism, and other forms of oppression that serves as an obstacle for students to reach their full potential. I am in a unique position in supporting students both individually and in a systemic role.
I can do this by holding myself accountable in reflecting on my own biases and how they can affect my work with students. I can commit time to learning about marginalized communities and their current struggles, as well as what they have gone through in history. I can become proficient in leveraging data to examine disparities in equity within my school. From there, I can develop a culturally sensitive counseling program that acknowledges the impact of differing levels of power and privilege on student achievement. I can also do this by staying informed about ongoing policy shifts and legislative updates,
My Advocacy Project focused on closing the equity gap of Pacific Islanders graduating high school. Prior to this project, I was aware of the fact that although Pacific Islanders make up a small population at HHS, they had the most amount of letter grade F's in their classes. This information caught the attention of admin, and myself. This assessment did not capture everyone's response considering time constraints, as well as capacity. It served the purpose of confirming that Pacific Islander students need additional support that dives into their social-emotional wellbeing.
such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as well as State Assembly Bills like AB 540, AB 167 (pertaining to foster youth), and AB 331 (focused on Ethnic Studies course mandates in high school).
