Project Description
To understand the importance of cybersecurity, I got to look up recent examples in the media of data breaches. After finding and researching, I had to evaluate my two sources. I also took the CCBC Cyber Training course to enhance my knowledge of online security
Lessons Learned
After doing some digging, I realized that people are a lot easier to influence than I thought. Many of the articles I found discussed everyday citizens being scammed because they believed they were helping those in need. This project also taught me to always second guess how trustworthy emails look, as I constantly use my email for school work. I learned that email attacks can range from a spoofed email or a full on ransomware attack.
To the left is my certificate for completing the CCBC cybersecurity training course!
Cybersecurity Mishaps in the News
Cassandra Drummond lives in Virginia and met the love of her life on a dating website. Little did she know she would soon fall victim to a phishing scam. The man she met on a dating app registered a fake shipping company, asked her for money to pay for a package, and over several months asked for more saying the delivery company needed additional money for the package to finish shipping. Over these few months, she continued to believe the many lies the scammer told her as the scammer pretended to be the shipping company. For example, the scammer said that to stop the package delay, she had to pay a certain amount of money. In the end, Drummond handed over $170, 000. To prevent this from happening to us, people should always check the link address they're clicking on before clicking. It is also important that people not trust blindly after being provided many excuses as to why they need to fork over money electronically.

City schools in Albany had shut down their network after someone attempted to hack into it repeatedly. No data was compromised in the several attempted hacks, but while the network is down Albany schools have been completing classwork on paper. Several hacking attempts failed and now many Forsenic Investigators from Homeland Security are investigating why the hackers may have been trying to access the school's data and what methods were used. This incident may lead school districts to re-considering how they keep information secure. The school system did what was right by shutting off its network as this doesn't allow for hackers to breach the system. In a hacking situation like this, it is best to secure your data and contact someone who can help like your HR department or the authorities.
