This is a gift that I received from a student. It may not look like more than a heart, but it is a symbol of love and making children feel seen in the classroom. I facilitated this activity with students on Valentine's Day one year. The students were told to give their creation to someone who they loved a lot and who made an impact on them. I was given this by one of my students. It stands for me as a symbol of the love that students feel in the classrooms that I walk into.
This relates to IPTS standard 9H which states that the competent teacher "understands the importance of modeling appropriate dispositions in the classroom." It is very important to me to create a space of hospitality and safety for my students in any setting I step into, especially in the education world.
I learned that love is most important. I know that students need a safe place where they feel loved to step into in their everyday journeys. I treasure this gift from a student, knowing that I had made such an impact for this student that year.
This was a sample slideshow that I made to prepare for a Back to School night that I would have at a future place of employment. I envisioned what I would want to share with parents that night and have them share with me and put it into a slideshow.
This relates to IPTS standard 9M which states that the competent teacher "communicates relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents or guardians, and peers, using a variety of technology and digital-age media and formats." This Back to School night information slideshow communicates to parents and invites parents to communicate with me as well. It establishes a collaborative relationship early on and is presented through an online slideshow.
I learned that this is something I will want to do in my future classrooms. I want to share a lot of this same information with parents. I want to ask for their input as well about their kids and encourage them from the start to be involved.Â
