I created this math game to supplement a lower-elementary math lesson about arrays. The lesson was just an introductory lesson and experimenting with arrays. I decided to create the game for students to learn through experimenting with the concept. I wanted to also have something to keep on hand for math centers.
This game connects to IPTS standard 5C which states that the competent teacher "knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources." I was able to use a different way of teaching to help students understand the concept outside of direct instruction.
I learned that students have a lot more fun and retain a lot more when they are able to drive their own learning. I loved seeing the students light up when they experimented and then got something new in the game. Through all of that, they were introduced to arrays and it fulfilled the same purpose of lesson.
I created this activity through an online platform called Desmos. This activity was used as an assignment for an online learning day due to weather. I created this activity for students to be able to individually show me their skills and review our measurement unit.
This connects to IPTS standard 5N which states that the competent teacher "uses technology to accomplish differentiated instructional objectives that enhance learning for each student." I was able to create a unique way for students to achieve the same instructional objective. This assignment also gave students a new technology platform to work with.
I learned how to exercise flexibility in planning when I needed to transition a full day of teaching to be online. I learned that online activities are very engaging and students had a fun time working through it.
