This is a lesson plan for re-engaging a concept that students needed to see more of in math. The idea of this lesson was to give students more background and practice with the concept they had learned in order to develop and solidify their skills more.
This connects to IPTS standard 3D which says that the competent teacher "understands when and how to adjust plans based on outcome data, as well as student needs, goals, and responses." This lesson was created to reengage a concept and adjust lesson plans according to what students had missed from the initial assignment.
Through this re-engagement lesson, I was able to learn how to present the same concept but in an expanded way. If I would've given just the same lesson again, it would not have been enough for the material to click with students who had not yet gotten it. Students need to be taught with a variety of methods. Re-engagement lessons help students engage with another method of learning.
This is a photo of how I split students into five different reading group tiers for ELA intervention in one of my student teaching placements. The levels are based on their scores from various state reading tests. The students were also observed reading and informally assessed in the classroom. Students' names are covered in this photo, but we can still see the different groups' colors. Students were listed in order from highest to lowest reading level. That list was then cut in half and partners were created.
This connects to IPTS standard 3G which says that the competent teacher "understands how research and data guide instructional planning, delivery, and adaptation." The data pulled from informal as well as state reading tests informed and helped create these reading groups.
I learned a lot through being able to do this. I was able to meet with the reading coach with my cooperating teacher and grade-level teachers to talk through the data about this. It was great to look at all the data and be able to match reading levels to students' reports as well as how they were doing in the classroom too.
