This student assessment project was conducted to assess a student's level of reading, interest in reading, and to progress monitor reading and writing skills through informal assessments.
This connects to IPTS standard 6K which states that the competent teacher "uses assessment data, student work samples, and observations from continuous monitoring of student progress to plan and evaluate effective content area reading, writing, and oral communication instruction." I was able to collect and use data as well as student work samples to inform me of their level of reading and interest in it. That helped me gain deeper understanding of the student's abilities as well as how to proceed with teaching this student reading and writing.
I learned strategies for assessment and how to do running records. I also learned that the student's level of interest in reading, home life, and schooling background all play a role in their reading level and how well they participate in communication strategies.
During my student teaching, I created a template for a mini book. I planned for and guided students through a writing unit to create their own books. Students were taught about cover pages, about the author, author's note, dedication, and how to organize their work in a book. Students also wrote and illustrated all of their own work through stages of writing that I implemented during this unit. The photo displays my example for my mini book as I walked the students through various stages of writing to complete their own books.
This connects to IPTS standard 6Q which states that the competent teacher "integrates reading, writing, and oral communication to engage students in content learning." I created this mini book and conducted the writing process for students to be able to cultivate their creativity and showcase their writing competency in a book with many components to it. The whole writing process was very engaging to students.
I learned how much fun writing can be and how important it is to engage students in the full writing process. Students were able to showcase to me their knowledge and skills in writing throughout multiple weeks of learning and creating this project. They were very proud of their work at the end and enjoyed the publishing party we had to celebrate them!
