This semester, I was placed at The Helix School! This school is K-12 for students on the autism spectrum. I was in Ms. Monica's 3rd-5th grade class. The class had 6 amazing students as well as 2 additional aids for select students. Being in this classroom expanded my passion for working in special education and helped me build great skills for my future career. This class was very well organized, and I observed great growth within each student during my short time there. It was amazing to watch how to adapt a classroom with various learning levels and abilities. I believe the teacher did a great job managing her classroom and always having the students' best interests as a top priority.
OT at The Helix School
This semester, I was also able to explore my interest in school-based OT. I split my fieldwork time between the classroom and working with the school's 3 OT's. I was able to watch classroom OT lessons, one-on-one OT, OT and PT group, etc. It was amazing to explore the endless opportunities in OT, and I am now looking forward to a pathway in OT. I believe having an undergraduate degree in education is a great foundation to work in school-based OT, and I am looking forward to bringing my knowledge and experience into my future field of work. In OT, I worked with students of all ages who all did different areas of work. Some of the skills we worked on were emotional recognition and regulation, fine motor skills, eye tracking, coordination, strength, etc. I am thrilled for my future in OT and am very grateful for my opportunities at The Helix School.
This semester, I was placed at Vellecito Elementary School! I was placed in Mrs. Levinson's TK classroom. This classroom helped me learn so much about phonics, classroom management, and the various people who make the school year possible. The classroom had a student aide and lots of outside help from supportive teachers, staff, and parents. One of the main focuses in this classroom was phonics. Every day, I got to come in and observe the classroom's morning routine, which always included phonics or their letter of the week. Mrs. Levinson also did a great job of including OT, speech, and other supportive practices to help her students who need extra support and aren't offered it through the school. Overall, this semester at Vallecito was great, and I learned so much!
