the action of working with someone to produce or create something.
Collaboration is so important to build a strong classroom community. Partner and group work is an effective way for students to spread and expand their knowledge among fellow classmates. It also allows for students to build friendships in the classroom, which is very important. I think working in groups can allow students to work on the other "4 C's" which are communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Collaboration can build a strong classroom environment and help students work to the best of their abilities.
At Coleman, I was able to experience many collaborative working experiences. My favorite form of collaboration was this group circle during reading time, where all students had to help each other answer questions about the book the teacher was reading to them. The teacher did this during closing circle, and I think it was a great way for them to end the day.
At All Children Academics, I viewed collaboration in a special education classroom. Communication was a key factor when implementing collaboration in the classroom. Kids with special needs sometimes have a harder time communicating their emotions, making it harder to collaborate effectively in the classroom. Combating this with appropriate communication skills using "I statements" instead of "You statements" promoted collaboration in the classroom as well as during lunch. Collaboration is also necessary between teachers for the classroom to function smoothly. Collaboration between the teachers and students can promote the classroom experience for everyone.
I collaborated with a classmate to create a science lesson plan that included a PE emphasis. We decided to create a fun and collaborative game that had students use prior knowledge of the layers of the skin to carry out a model and game that represents this bodily function. This lesson plan is fun and is a great way to help students collaborate.
