The ability to successfully use interpersonal skills and components of literacy (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) to contribute to teaching, learning, and development.
Communication is a huge part of a classroom community. Being able to communicate as a student and a teacher is very important for the safety of a classroom. I think it is very important for students to express to fellow students how they feel, but it is also important for students to express to their teachers how they feel. However, to do so, a basis of trust has to be set. I also think it is very important to recognize how different students communicate. Students may express through words, actions, and body language, and I think it is important for teachers to understand every student's needs and the different ways they may express them.
Components of effective communication
In order to have effective communication through students and teachers you need to set an expectation to your students. Getting a point across is an imporant factor but in order for the communication to mean anything, there has to be listening on the other end. To have a respectful and safe environment students need to express and also listen.
Drama and Communication
In the Introduction to Teaching course, our class had a heavy emphasis on drama and applying drama in our careers. I believe that drama is a great way to develop great class communication and collaboration. Because I want to work with SPED students, I think nonverbal drama activities are a great way to create a strong classroom environment. These activities would be great to use at the beginning of the year to create stronger connections and better non-verbal communication skills.
To continue, above is a drama history lesson. In my Introduction to Teaching class, because we had an emphasis on drama, my group decided to combine drama into our history lesson plan. We designed a Bill of Rights lesson in which the activity was creating skits to act out the importance and effects of the Bill of Rights. This lesson is a fun and interactive way for students to learn history and practice drama and communication skills at the same time. This lesson requires classroom communication as well as small groups. Table groups must communicate to create a cohesive skit to represent an assigned Bill of Rights. This lesson would be great to strengthen classroom communication and community.
