My first semester, my freshman year, I was placed at Coleman Elementary School to work with the school's counselor. Although this isn't the typical placement, I still appreciated what I learned and what I was able to take from this opportunity. During my time here, I was able to work and meet many kids of all different ages. I observed many different teaching styles varying from a large range of age groups. This placement has opened my eyes to the many different pathways that can be taken in teaching education. This semester, I was able to recognize my interest in special education and my appreciation for teaching small groups. I deeply appreciate the time I spent at Coleman and strive to bring what I learned into my future profession!
Inclusivity at Coleman
Working with Ms. Cassy allowed me to experience the empowerment of inclusiveness at Coleman. This past year, she brought Coleman's first pride spirit week to life, which is an important step forward in creating an inclusive, educational, and safe environment for the students of the school. Many of the classrooms I visited also had different factors of inclusiveness, whether it was different families, cultures, LGBTQ+ community, etc. I valued Coleman's appreciation and recognition of inclusion in a school community, and I hope to carry that into my future school and classroom.
During my second semester at Dominican, I got the opportunity to do my fieldwork observation at All Children's Academics. This school provides education for neurodiverse students with various educational needs. This school deepened my interest in working in special education and was a very insightful experience for my future career goals. I worked in the school's second to third-grade class with a small population of 10 students. This placement was a very helpful tool and expanded my knowledge of working with neurodiverse students. I am now very passionate about continuing my education to become a special education teacher at a school similar to All Children's Academics.
Case Study
While working at All Children Academics, we did a case study where we focused on one student from the classroom. I chose a second grader named Colm who has Autism. Working with Colm helped expand my knowledge of the Autism spectrum and the cognitive and behavioral struggles that come with it. I was able to gain coping behavioral methods like breath work and physical release of anger. I also learned how to help a student who has a lack of motivation for school.
Teaching a Lesson
During my time at the school, I observed the students' social intelligence activities. These lessons were meant to help students improve their social skills and abilities with their classmates. I was fortunate enough to lead one of these lessons, where students were given scenarios and had to come up with solutions to these problems. This included teamwork among the students to come up with answers. It also focused on problem-solving skills because the students were tasked to come up with solutions to the scenarios they were given. Teaching this lesson helped me work on classroom management and collaboration. Overall, it went very smoothly, and it was a great learning experience.
