Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
From creating these Unit Plan I think that my professional growth is seen through my development of a varied instructional approach as Standard 6A suggests, “varied instructional approaches used before, during and after reading.” Prior to this course I didn’t have any experience in creating a Unit Plan for ELA instruction. I also did not have any experience in working within edTPA task 1 so while I am still learning all this planning entails I feel as though this artifact was useful in my growth as an educational student. I also feel as though my artifact conveys my knowledge of Standard 6B because as it states, “...the reading process involves the construction of meaning through the interactions of the reader’s background knowledge and experiences, the information in the text, and the purpose of the reading situation;” I believe my artifact reflects that because my plans are meant to activate prior student experiences and use of partner work to engage students naturally.
During my edTPA planning commentary, I go into detail about my use of communication theory as Standard 6C states. Communication is made through many modes and my artifact and knowledge of this is reflected with my ELA instruction through not only reading and writing, but visually representing and speaking for my summative assessment. My summative assessment also connects to Standard 6H as it states, “...use a variety of formal and informal assessments to recognize and address the reading, writing, and oral communication needs of each student…” I didn’t just have a large multiple question test. My assessments reflect purposeful planning and constant feedback from students to assess mastery of my message and common core standards as well as the social emotional standards.
My artifact is something that I can build upon in my teaching career. I am very proud of the completion of work I have created for my future students. I think this reflects the time and effort of my ELA experience and growth so far in the program. I look forward to revising this work as I continue to grow as a professional. I look forward to infusing more elements of ELA teachings as I grow professionally. One day when I find a school to work at I hope to create a community of Growth Mindset within it for my students and co-workers.
