Definition: Professional responsibility is effective connections with the school staff an community. This responsibility also includes understanding and implementing teacher code. Professional responsibility also makes sure teachers guide students by discussing moral and societal concerns in everyday life and within the education system.
Goal: One of the biggest areas of improvement I needed from Practicum I was incorporation of Indigenous teachings. My goal of Practicum II is incorporating diverse cultures into the classroom is my aim, with a focus on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures (TQS 1f, 2e, 5b, 5c).
Goal: My goal for year three practicum at Annie Foote School is to direct behaviour using a unique, overarching vision of my teaching philosophy while highlighting the ways it has evolved through different experiences. I also want to collaborate and support student learning by working with teachers, students, parents/guardians, and the local community (TQS 1c, 1d, 1e).
Strategies: I want to work on this goal by having meaningful conversations with staff and students as well as parents/guardians to make sure students get the best learning experience while teaching.
Reflection: I believe I completed my goal fairly good. I was able to create a safe and welcoming environment for my students. I was also able to create meaningful relationships with staff, students, and parents/guardians. I was able to attend Parent Teacher Conferences which allowed me to meet families and have a conversation with them about the work their child had done in class. I was also able to make Sootsimans with my students, an Indigenous teaching that was passed down to us by Elder Roy. I wanted to include this teaching as a few of my students were Indigenous and I wanted them to feel connected to the teaching.
Goal: My goal, similar to last semester, is to continue to incorporate a variety of different cultures, with an emphasis on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures, into the classroom. During my three connected lessons, I will incorporate a connection with the book The Girl Who Drank the Moon and indigenous literature and teachings. (TQS 1f, 2e, 5b, 5c).
Reflection: Reflection: Throughout the semester I was able to incorporate different cultures, including my own. I was able to teach the students about Ramadan and a bit about Islam and many of the students enjoyed my short lesson about this. With my three connected lessons, the chapter I read was about a council meeting. I emphasized that within Indigenous communities there are also similar councils with a focus on Elders and their teaching and guides, much like the chapter within the story. I am glad to have been able to tackle this goal as in the past I have had a bit of trouble incorporating these points into my teaching.
Goal: My goal is to incorporate a variety of different cultures, with an emphasis on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures, into the classroom. To achieve this goal I will be utilizing various forms of delivery such as class readings and activities(TQS 1f, 2e, 5b, 5c).
Strategies: I will meet this goal by reading as many diverse books as possible. During recess the teachers will read aloud to the students, this is when I am planning to read the books. I will also ask students for suggestions on books from their culture to let them feel heard as well.
Reflection: The Indigenous Children’s Literature Log is a document with books written by various indigenous authors. This is a valuable resource to broaden Indigenous literature and I will be using it whenever I can to introduce this kind of literature into my classroom. I unfortunately could not read as many books as I wanted, however, I do plan on reading much more.
Goal: My goal is to create relationships outside the small circle from last semester, which was mostly staff and students within my pod. I want to be able to create relationships with staff and students in other pods and try for other grades as well.
Strategies: I will meet this goal by visiting the staff room more often and try to engage in conversations with other teachers in the room. I will also try to accomplish this goal by visiting other classes.
Goal: My goal is to be able to create impactful relationships with teachers, staff, and students in a professional manner.
Strategy: I will meet this goal by observing my mentor teacher see how they interact with colleagues and students. Through this, I can try to see what works for me and try to implement that.
