My name is Alisha Saadat. In Urdu, my mother tongue, my first name means protected by god; my last name means prosperity, happiness, and good fortune. I am of Pakistani ancestry and was born and raised in Calgary. Teaching is a big part of my life as many of my relatives are also teachers.
The moment I wanted to be a teacher is still a vivid memory. I can still picture myself in first grade, looking up at my teacher as she answered a question I had. I was looking at her and smiling while she explained the answer when I determined that was who I wanted to be in the future. I aspire to have a positive impact on students' lives and to be able to assist anyone in solving any issue that might arise.
I have decided to minor in science. A couple of factors led me to do this. I have always loved science, whether it is theories or experiments; learning about it always opened my eyes to new ways of looking at the world. Most of my favourite teachers were also my science teachers. They always knew numerous methods to explain things to us and different experiments that would help us apply what we had learned. They also always sensed when we were struggling and would assist us to get back on track. Without fail, this method of instruction had a profound impression on me and had an impact on how I desired to teach.
As more of an introverted individual, I like to spend my time alone. I find myself most energetic during those times. I also enjoy listening to music. I try to have it playing whenever I can. I have a wide variety of music that I listen to, depending on my mood. This range can be classic piano music or upbeat pop tracks. I also listen to many different artists from all across the world. I also enjoy origami, the art form that revolves around creating objects from paper. It started as a way to keep my hands busy and turned into something I became passionate about. I still enjoy doing origami when I can, however, I do not turn to it as much anymore as a form of pastime. Some of my favourite pieces to make are butterflies. I also enjoy making tiny DNA spirals. I do not have any pictures of those as I usually give them away after making them, as I do with a lot of the origami that I make.
I love learning new languages. Currently, there are ten languages on my list to learn. Some of these languages are Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi, and a few more. In high school, I got the chance to take Chinese 10 and Chinese 20. I loved that class. I also really loved my teacher. She made class amazing and something I always looked forward to (except when there was a test of course). Unfortunately due to COVID-19, I had to spend my grade 11 year online and they did not offer Chinese online. This caused me to do Chinese 20 in my grade 12 year, meaning I was one of the oldest students in the class. I had also forgotten most of the Mandarin I learned, but once I came back my teacher was willing to help me get back to where I was without letting me feel as if I did skip 2 years without learning the language.
