Definition: An inclusive environment is making thoughtful decisions based on environmental factors. Creating a safe, ethical, and respectful learning environment. An inclusive environment also uses appropriate language when addressing students and student needs.
Goal: My goal is keep establishing a place where kids can enjoy and display their many cultures while also being free to express themselves in a secure and welcoming setting, ensuring each student feels safe, respected, cared for, and accepted (TQS 2c, 4a, 4c, 4d, 4g, 5b). I want to expand this to outside of my classroom, where other students feel comfortable and welcomed when with me.
Goal: Having an inclusive environment is one of my main goals and is a big part of my teaching philosophy. I want to create a safe space for learning that is secure on all levels—physical, social, cultural, and psychological (TQS 2c, 4a, 4c, 4d, 4g, 5b). This will also establish a polite and moral learning environment that inspires students to take chances, develop trust, value diversity, gain confidence, and demonstrate leadership (TQS 4a, 4g, 5b, 5c).
Strategies: Having an inclusive environment is quite important, and I want to be able to do that by showing my students that they can come to me with whatever they are comfortable sharing and there will be no judgement to show them it is a safe space.
Reflection: This was my main goal, I became a safe space where students could come to me with trust. As explained in my teaching philosophy, I was able to become a person in their class they could look up to and see that for them there is a place for them too, whether it is a teacher in a classroom or a CEO of a company, they could do it.
Goal: My goal is to continue to create a space for students to be able to express themselves in a safe and comforting environment as well as be able to celebrate and show off their diverse cultures. Making sure that every student is welcomed, cared for, respected, and safe (TQS 2c, 4a, 4c, 4d, 4g, 5b).
Reflection: The relationships I was able to make with the students this year were great, and many students were able to come to me if they had any questions or issues. They felt comfortable around me and respected me as a teacher, even if I was only in once a week.
Goal: My goal is to be able to create a space for students to be able to express themselves in a safe and comforting environment as well as be able to celebrate and show off their diverse cultures. (TQS 2c, 4a, 4c, 4d, 4g, 5b).
Strategies: I will create relationships with the students in a way that they feel comfortable sharing anything with me while maintaining a professional setting. I will show them that there will be no judgement, however, I will be setting boundaries and following the necessary procedures.
Reflection: Marlborough School’s mission statement is everyone is safe, seen, and heard. The students had written what lets them feel safe, seen, and heard. Every student had different things that let them feel good about themselves and within the school and at home.
Goal: My goal is to create a space where the students feel that they are cared for and respected. I want to create a relationship with my students where they feel comfortable having conversations whether it is about how they are feeling or how they are doing with the lesson.
Strategies: I will complete this goal by engaging more with the students and letting them know that no matter what they say to me there will be no judgement.
Goal: My goal is to create an activity that lets students show off their beliefs creatively by letting them know that they will not be judged for anything they do and should embrace themselves.
Strategies: I will meet this goal by letting the students create a personal coat of arms with a different amount of sections depending on the grade level. In the sections, the students can add religion, interests, passions, beliefs, culture, background or any part of their identity.
