beakon

beakon is a 2-D game focused on restoring color to the world. The player plays as a small hooded bird creature who can paint the world either by walking around or using left click. As the player fills in the world, they encounter several smaller birds that the player can move close to paint in, causing the birds to follow the player throughout the level.

I worked on beakon during the USC MEGA Newbies and Vets Game Jam 2021 alongside 7 other people. We had 48 hours to make a game with the theme of "restore," and this game is what we came up with.

For this game, I worked primarily on UI, including the title screen and pause menus, as well as the AI for the birds. We had originally planned for the birds to act as enemies who would chase the player and take their brush, preventing the player from painting until the bird was caught. However, due to scoping concerns, we instead decided to make the birds harmless followers that also acted as mini guides for the player to reach the goal.

Note: beakon ended up winning the Best Art prize for the game jam!
