Citizen: Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.
Practicing good digital citizenship is one of the best ways to help students become aware of the impacts of communication. For this assignment, I was able to construct an experience and assessment idea to help students practice digital citizenship. This assignment aligns with ISTE standard 2.3a by creating experiences where students can make positive and socially responsible contributions to the online community.
Safe management of personal and student data is so important. For this assignment, I was able to research on the best practices for personal data management. Through my research, I was able to come up with the personal guidelines and management statements that I will follow as a teacher. This assignment aligns with ISTE standard 2.3d by managing personal data and identity to keep students safe.
Teaching children at a young age how to be good digital citizens can start as young as preschoolers. While they may not have their own devices, they can be educated on the power of words and how they affect people. When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to work with a teacher who conducted many conversations and activities with her students about good citizenship. Ms. Miller mentored the children on the power of kind words, how to respect others' boundaries, and how to keep others' information private. Ms. Miller reflected these characteristics herself to the students daily, and as the year went on, one could see the change in how the students treated each other.
