How is Technical Writing Different?

Technical writing in the workplace may differ from academic writing in may ways:

• One and done? Technical documents may be constantly edited and updated.

• Are you used to writing alone? Technical documents are often written by a team.

• Writing for the web means using less text, more space, and visual details like icons, pictures, and bullet points.

• Your audience may be local, national, or even global.

• There may be ethical and political contexts to be aware of, especially with a national or global audience.
