OVERVIEW:

This unit is designed to help students understand and develop an appreciation of other cultural perspectives and learn about global issues in order to become living and participating citizens in our global society. The unit will help students construct an awareness of the world as a global community, and recognize the rights and responsibilities of citizens to take action with a global consciousness.

The students will learn that what affects the world affects them as well and will be encouraged to develop an understanding about concerning issues in the world, and to develop empathy with, and an active concern for, those with whom they share it. Students will have the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills about complex global issues and come face to face with the controversial issues of our time through the media and modern communications technology.

LEARNER GOALS:

  • Define global citizenship and the roles and responsibilities of global citizens
  • Develop an interest and concern for others in a wider sphere and a sense of their own role as a world citizen.
  • Develop a sense of individual and collective responsibility
  • Feel empathy towards others locally and globally
  • Practice awareness of, and respect for, the diversity of cultures and people in this country and in the world.
  • Understand the concern for injustice and inequality around the world
  • Develop an interest in world events.
  • Participate in class discussions expressing social and political views concerning global issues
  • Compare and contrast political structures in the US to those in other countries
  • Identify cross-cultural skills and attitudes needed in order to become effective citizens in a diverse world.
  • Understand the economic and social conditions of children around the world.
  • Identify the principles of human rights in the US and around the world.
  • Identify the roles of non-profit organizations around the world and their intent to make a difference in the lives of other
  • Recognize the responsibility of several global organizations like United Nations, UNICEF, and World Food.

The overall goal of this unit is to provide the students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to play an active part in society as informed, empathetic and critical citizens who are socially and morally responsible. It is taught with hopes to provide the awareness they need in order to interact with others, to influence and make a difference in their communities and to realize their potential as adults of the future.
