LEARNER GOALS:

  • Identify personal learning styles and establish immediate and future learning goals
  • Compare and contrast educational systems in the US to those in other countries
  • Understand education requirements for colleges in the US and in other countries
  • Analyze skills and abilities required in a variety of career options and relate them to their own skills and abilities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of a relationship between the changing nature of work and the educational environment.
  • Assess personal, educational and career skills that are transferable to various jobs.
  • Use a career planning process that includes a self-assessment, evidence of personal development, and a career portfolio.
  • Understand how societal needs and functions influence the nature and the structure of work.
  • Compare lifestyle options as determined by their career choices.

This unit is designed to help students compare the differences and similarities of the variety of school systems that exist, understand the need of having diversity in a school, and compare the benefits between the public and private school system. Furthermore, students will investigate what the requirements are for acquiring acceptance to a variety of universities and the cost of higher education.

This unit aims at helping students build a greater level of self-awareness and self-confidence; coupled with a desire for self-enrichment. The activities in this unit will encourage students to think ahead and prepare for a possible future career. Through a variety of audio activities, readings, group discussions, students will be able to identify their professional interests and abilities; explore a variety of career options; match and prioritize possible careers with their personal interests, skills and values; and be better prepared to make decisions regarding post-secondary training and/or educational programs that are necessary to fulfill their career goals.
