The use of summer farms has been known since before the Viking Age in Norway. In Sweden, summer farms are called "fäbod". In Norway and Sweden the seasonal migration to the mountains is still practiced to a small extent.

The European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism is a network that promotes the utilization of traditional heritage landscapes in agriculture. Transhumance is the seasonal movement of livestock by farmers. Typically, the transhumance community lives down in the valley cultivating the land, and part of the community goes higher up in the mountains to herd cattle in the summer. Transhumance farming is still practiced in the Alps, France and Italy.
