In the legislation on conservation varieties (MMMa 16/09), land use refers to populations or clones of a plant species that have naturally adapted to the environmental conditions of their growing area. (Rural development program 2014-2020, p. 52). Gene bank storage consists of the following actions (sub-action 10.2):
A. Cultivation of native plant varieties
native varieties of grass and fodder plants
native varieties of cereal crops
native varieties of root vegetables
native varieties of seed potatoes
native varieties of oil and fiber crops
native varieties of vegetables
old trade varieties
transformed strains of old commercial varieties.
B. Back-up collections of native plants
Gene bank preservation activities promote the maintenance of seed collections and the maintenance of native plant varieties. Gene bank preservation activities are not surface-based. Activities are mainly carried out through the coordinators of national genetic resource programs. (Development program for Mainland Finland 2014-2020, p. 318)
In native plant cultivation contracts, an annual compensation of €400/plant variety is paid for maintenance of the crop.
