The Convention on Biodiversity is a United Nations convention signed in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. In 2012, 191 countries were parties, of which 168 have signed it. The goal of the Convention on Biodiversity is to preserve the diversity of organisms and habitats, protect the Earth's ecosystems, animal and plant species, and nurture the sustainable use of natural resources. The Biodiversity Convention aims to be taken into account in all activities related to nature, such as agriculture and forestry, construction, tourism and housing.
Finland has an action plan to protect biodiversity. In addition to this, Finland has a biodiversity strategy. The first biodiversity strategy was valid in the years 1997-2005.
