Investigations away from the screen - check out action ideas below!
We challenge you to take action away from the screen to learn more about your issue. Want to learn more about......
Poverty/homelessness?
International Poverty rate is USD $1.90 per day (which is approximately 83 Birr per day)
Could you feed yourself on 83 Birr per day? If you had to, what could you buy? Record 3-7 days of your meals and estimate the cost. Reflect.
Technology...?
Explore the pros and cons of technology at home
Record you and your family's technology use - list technology & record number of hours per day.
Can you survive a day/ 3 days/ a week without technology?
Impact on Environment
Record and evaluate your family's food waste, plastic, energy or purchasing behavior
Make a photo diary of your consumption
Use Litterati App to photo and collect trash with your family
Taking Action to Find Out More
We decided to make a survey.
Our goal for our survey was to find out:
How much do you know about the Florida Manatee? The more people know about something, they more they care and will want to protect it
What actions do you take that could contribute to the health of the Florida Manatee? Consuming a lot of plastic, and putting waste into our waterways impacts their environment.
Our target audience was G5 and MS students
We had ________ students that completed the survey.
We learned that....
This important data taught us that....
This graph shows us that our ICS community __________. We now know that we need to _________
Using our thinking skills...
This new data helped us to formulate new questions such as:

OUR ACTION: Investigations Away from the Screen
Manatees are being impacted by climate change. The water temperature is increasing which is causing algae blooms which are like a poison to the manatees. I wanted to learn more how much plastic my family and I consumed, and then think about how we could cut down our plastic consumption to reduce the impact that our actions are having on our environment.
Our family stayed in Hollywood, Florida for 4 weeks, so I decided to try the Litterati App to help me collect more data about the amount of trash found on the local beach.
Litterati App is easy to use and free to download. As you collect trash, you take a photo of it and the App puts it on the Google Map, identifies the type of trash (plastic, paper, etc), and counts the number that you collect.

28th May, 2021 Finn, Charlie and I collected trash along 4 kms of the Hollywood beach in Florida
Hollywood Beach looks like a clean beach - BUT we collected 141 pieces of trash over 4 kms of beach. With this action, we discovered:
The majority of trash was small pieces of plastic that had already started to decompose (break down). The plastic was clear and it was impossible to tell where the plastic had originally come from. I found this really scary as it tells me that this plastic had already been in the environment for a long time, and would have ended up as microplastic in our oceans.
One of our favorite 'Superdooper' icy pole wrappings
4 face masks :(
A lot of broken children's beach play equipment - such as buckets, and spades
Only one cigarette :)
There are heaps of ways that we can take action, while staying active and healthy. My family and I signed up to do a virtual 5K run/walk/jog to raise money for World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The registration fee was $35 USD each, and this supports their global conservation work.
We could do it at the gym, but we are lucky to be in Florida, USA so we want to connect with the beautiful nature here. We plan to head to the mangroves again, and maybe even do the distance in a kayak exploring the area!

We also spent time together as a family and made this creative and powerful message 'Save the Manatees for You and Me'.

Organizations making our world a better place
Businesses and organizations can have a massive role in resolving social or environmental issues.
'Save the Manatee' is a non-for profit organization that is based in Florida.
THEIR MISSION
To protect manatees and their habitats throughout the whole world, and to rebuild their population so that they are no longer consider 'threatened' or 'endangered'.
THEIR BUSINESS MODEL
A not-for-profit organization which means
any financial gain or profit is not given to the owners, but used to achieve the business mission.
In this example, the money is used to:
protect and rebuild healthy ecosystems
to raise awareness on how to reduce human impact on manatees and to
ensure governments around the world put in place and enforce regulations to protect manatees for future generations.
During our Sharing the Planet inquiry, we explored how innovation can promote sustainability. Innovators are creative and think outside the box. Our PYP program encourages us to do the same.
This organization was originally started by a very passionate former Florida Governor and U.S Senator Jimmy Buffett. The 'Save the Manatee Club' is now a world leading, international manatee conservation organization.

For $25 USD to $500 USD or more per year, we could adopt a real manatee. This money would be used to fund the manatee rescue, rehabilitation and research programs, the education projects and the programs that help protect manatees and their habitat.

Local, African organizations that make our world a better place
As consumers, we have the power to consider the purpose and impact each of our decisions make to ensure that we are living sustainably.
Businesses can do this too.
'Ocean Sole' is a social enterprise in Kenya, and even though they are a long way away from America, they help endangered animals like manatees.
Social enterprises are businesses that have social principles and function with a sustainable mindset.
They aim to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, or the environment.
They make their money from selling goods and services, but they reinvest their profits back into the businesses or local community.
And so when they profit, society profits.
We ALL BENEFIT :)
'Ocean Sole' believes “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
They collect old flip-flips that wash up on the beach and make beautiful pieces of art. This isn't the only thing that makes them a social enterprise!
What other social or environmental problems are they trying to resolve?
This business also employs more than 100 low income mothers in the community, and puts 10-15% of their profit into conservation and educational programs.
They even worked with the 'Save the Manatee Club' on Manatee Appreciation Day, 2020 and made manatee art work, where 20% of their sales were donated!
And of course, they remove trash from the oceans directly helping the environment!

A manatee made out of old flip flops collected at the beach, by low income mothers in Kenya! The money made from this art supports local communities and helps manatees too!
You may be surprised to know that there is an estimated 55,000 social enterprises that operate in Ethiopia where more than a quarter (¼) of 109 million people live below the poverty line, according to the World Bank (2019).
