While, Ms. Afrika Abney was a middle school student at NationHouse, she had the opportunity to provide services. Ms. Abney gave away this dance outfit many years ago.
Trained in West African dance and ballet by various dance companies and individuals based in Washington, D.C.. Ms. Afrika Abney was hired to provide services for several festivals that took place at Roosevelt Center in Greenbelt, MD in 2013 - 2015. However, she gave away the outfits and jewelry shown in these photos.
Ms. Afrika Abney is a seasoned dance consultant with an impressive career spanning over twenty years. Her expertise lies in the promotion of dance classes, workshops, and performances, alongside her skills in developing press kits and graphic designs tailored for dance-related events. Throughout her career, Ms. Abney has collaborated with a variety of organizations in Washington, D.C., including notable groups such as the African Heritage Dancers and Drummers, Memory of African Culture, Soul in Motion Players, Inc., and the Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers, among others, showcasing her versatility and commitment to the dance community.
With a rich background in both West African dance and ballet, Ms. Abney has honed her craft through extensive training with various dance companies and instructors in the Washington, D.C. area. Her teaching experience includes serving as a substitute dance instructor at the Joy of Motion Dance Center from 2013 to 2015, as well as leading West African dance classes at several summer camps, including the World Intensive Camp at Joy of Motion in 2013, M.O.M.I.E.S. TLC in 2015, and YWDEP in the same year. Additionally, she has directed performances for esteemed organizations such as the Akoma Drummers and the Bele Bele Rhythm Collective, further solidifying her reputation in the dance field.
Beyond her teaching roles, Ms. Abney has actively engaged students in the history and practice of West African dance through workshops at schools like H.D. Cooke Elementary School from 2011 to 2016 and Roots PCS in 2016. Her artistic contributions extend to numerous performances at significant events and venues, including the Africare Family Festival in June 1996, multiple appearances at Malcolm X Park until 2015, and the Funk Parade in 2014.
