From September 25, 2023 - October 13, 2023, Ms. Afrika Abney provided services for Me, Myself and Our Story: The Art of Memoir, Part 1. Information about the workshop was posted widely online and sent via email to parent groups, community organizations, schools, churches and other businesses. She disseminated flyers about the workshop in person at the following vennues located in Washington, D.C. Among them include Fort Stevens Recreation Center, Emery Heights Community Center (formerly known as Emery Recreation Center), and Center City Public Charter School - Brightwood Campus. 


Esther Productions Inc. and The Institute for African American Writing continue their 2023-2024 workshop  series; this second class is focused on the art of writing memoir.


Don't think for a second that you have to wait until you've got tons of gray hair before you can write a memoir.  There are interesting things that have already happened in your life and are worth writing about. And, your memoir doesn't have be book-length.


Join us for  Me, Myself & Our Story: The Art of the Memoir, Part 1 on October 14 from 10 am to 2 pm. (Part 2 will be held in November 2023. However, you can only attend, if you participated in Part 1). 


So register now. Expect to have fun while learning the elements of memoir. The session will also include a visit by a mystery published memoirist.

Here's what you can expect: Participants will review select short-memoirs and excerpts by award-winning writers; identify the elements of a memoir; examine various traditional and non-traditional formats for a memoir;  choose a personal episode on which the memoir will be developed; write a draft of  the memoir; and share that writing with the class.

jonetta rose barras will serve as the writing instructor. A bestselling author and award-winning journalist, she says she found her voice, experiencing life as a poet, fiction writer, performing artist, and community organizer. Along the way she became a magazine feature writer, investigative reporter, columnist and essayist. A member of the Society of Professional Journalists DC Pro Chapter Hall of Fame, her work has appeared in numerous publications including The Washington Post, Essence Magazine, The New Republic, USA Today, and Crisis Magazine. She currently writes a weekly column for The DC Line.

E.ETHELBERT MILLER, a memoirist, award-winning poet and 2022 Grammy nominee for the Best Spoken Word Poetry Album--Black Men Are Precious-- will be the guest speaker for the workshop, providing insights and tips into memoir writing. Mr. Miller is the author of two memoirs and several collections of poetry. He also is the editor of three anthologies of poetry. He is the editor of Poet Lore magazine and the host of the radio show "On the Margin," which airs Thursday mornings on WPFW-FM. He is the former director of Howard University's African American Resource Center, and has taught at several universities and colleges including American University, Emory & Henry College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
