A Note About the Apple ProRes Format

Another option that we sometimes use is the Apple ProRes format. You should not use this format for this project. If you happen to be creating an animation, in the future, that will be composited (assembled) into a larger animation , then this is the preferred format. This is because ProRes files can be compressed multiple times without a quality loss. That is not true for mp4 exports.

  • Apple ProRes is the video equivalent of a PNG image file. It uses lossless compression. In other words, it only compresses in a way that results in zero loss of quality.

  • A ProRes file will be pretty large.

  • It is the most common file format for passing around video segments that will be composited with other video or animation.

  • It's perfect for YouTube. Youtube will compress the video using a lossy compression format. By uploading a ProRes file, the video will undergo lossy compression only once.

  • Apple ProRes is available as an export option on both Apple and Windows OS computers.

Exporting a ProRes file:

  • Choose: Export > Export Video/Media

      • Format > Quicktime

      • Preset > Apple ProRes 4444
