AERA ACTION RESEARCH SIG Special Events:

1) Decolonizing Knowledge: Toward a Critical Research Justice Praxis

This event – Decolonizing Knowledge: Toward a Critical Research Justice Praxis – features a presentation and discussion with Michelle Fine and Linda Tuhiwai Smith. Michelle Fine is a Distinguished Professor of Social Psychology, Women’s Studies and Urban Education at the Graduate Center, CUNY. She is a founding member of the Public Science Project (PSP). Linda Tuhiwai Smith is Professor of Education and Maori Development and Pro-Vice Chancellor Maori at the University of Waikato. She has worked in the field of Maori education for many years as an educator and researcher. Her book “Decolonizing Methodologies Research and Indigenous Peoples” has been an international best seller in the indigenous world since its publication in 1998. Event co-sponsors include Public Science Project, URBAN at MIT, the Action Research Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and DataCenter. The fee for this event is $15 and people can register as a part of AERA Conference Registration.

2) Action Research Community/Business Meeting

Sunday April 28,

4:05 pm to 6 pm

All members of the AR SIG (and those who want to join the AR SIG) are invited to the Community/Business Meeting on Sunday. We will be sharing the work of the SIG over the past year and inviting you join with us to chart the future. Everyone is invited. It is a great opportunity to meet and work with others interested in Action Research. And when this meeting is over... the reception will continue so please plan to spend the whole evening with your action research colleagues.

3) Action Research Community Reception and Recognition

This free event is sponsored by the AERA Action Research SIG and is open to conference attendees and to educator practitioners involved with action research and Lesson Study in the Bay Area. Special thanks to Dr. Norman Vaughan of Mt. Royal University in Calgary, Canada and Dr. Mina Kim of San Francisco State for their leadership in planning and organizing the event.

4) Lesson Study Experience

Lesson Study Experience in San Francisco Unified: Lesson Study, Fish Bowl Observation, and Post-Lesson Panel Discussion. This free event is now full (it filled within two days of AERA on-line program opening!). Congratulations to Dr. Catherine Lewis and her colleagues at Mills College and to the teachers in San Francisco Unified who are engaged in a major Lesson Study project with Mills College. The Action Research SIG is pleased to have made available another community-based experience for AERA Conference participants. Our pilot experience at the AERA Conference in New Orleans in 2011 also featured a Lesson Study participation.

5) Action Research Network of the Americas (ARNA)

May 1 -2

San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center

The inaugural conference of the Action Research Network of the Americas (ARNA) will follow directly after AERA. This conference will feature presentations, roundtables, and workshops by action researchers from around the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Latin America as well as from a variety of other countries. Conference presentations are in English and Spanish. The keynote address for the conference will be delivered by internationally known author and action research consultant Dr. Jean McNiff of Britain’s York St. John University.
