Use the bark beetle computer model to explore the impacts of sanitation cutting on mitigating bark beetle outbreaks. Open an online data sheet (you will be asked to make a copy of the data sheet).  

After collecting the data, examine the results and consider the effect of these two cutting strategies. 

Procedure:

1. Run Model with default settings for 150 years. record the number of outbreaks and the Max Annual Forest Decline (see Figure at right). 

2. Repeat steps 1 to get five trials.

3. In "cut-down-trees?" Choose "when they are lightly infested" and run the model for 150 years for five trials, record the number of outbreaks and the Max Annual Forest Decline for each trial.

4. Repeat step 3 with the option "only when they are heavily infested" and run the model for 150 years for five trials, record the number of outbreaks and the Max Annual Forest Decline for each trial.
