Explore bark beetle outbreak using a computer model
Use the bark beetle computer model to explore the impacts of rising temperatures and droughts on the frequency of bark beetle outbreaks. Open an online data sheet (you will be asked to make a copy of the datasheet).
After collecting your data, examine the results and consider the impact of rising temperatures on the outbreaks. You may read the model rules in Model Info.
Run the Model with default settings for 150 years.
Count and record the number of outbreaks and the Max Annual Forest Decline (see Figure at right).
Repeat steps 1-2 to get five trials.
Increase avg-summer-temperature-increase by 0.5. 1, and 1.5 degrees,
Run the model for 150 years under each condition for five trials, record the number of outbreaks and the Max Annual Forest Decline for each trial.
