Task 1 of this lab, focuses on obtaining aerial imagery that has not been assigned data and link it to another image that does have data assigned to it. Data includes: Coordinate system, reference points, etc. In the case of St Helena California we were given an aerial image taken over the city in 1953 (gis.joewheaton.org); the image was simply that, an image. It had no coordinate system to indicate where in the world it was. By using the Georeferencing tool in ArcMap I was able to assign points that corresponded with features present in the 2002 imagery (courtesy gis.joewheaton.org) and assign the 1953 image the California State plane coordinate system. The georeferencing tool allows for each corresponding point to ultimately allow the images to be overlaid and, in this case, be used as reference maps. In this case, the images were used to compare the two time periods in this particular part of California over the course of 59 years.
