This lab is to demonstrate simple map-making abilities. with the use of ESRI ArcGIS; more specifically ArcMap. The use of ArcMap is the primary tool used to create maps, though there are open source alternatives such as QGIS, GRASS GIS, gVSIG, and others. When used correctly these tools can be effective in the areas of study in which they are intended for. The purpose of this lab is to convey what a basic map should contain and how an effective map contains 6 characteristics that make it effective (et. al., gis.joewheaton.org).
1. Colorful
2. Creative
3. Correct
4. Context
5. Convincing
6. Consistent
The following map is of Tony Grove Herbicide treatment zones. It is a map to inform those that visit the site to stick to the trails in the areas that have been treated to avoid spreading the herbicide to more areas surrounding Tony Grove. The interactive map is intended for users not familiar with GIS to interact with the zones and see their relative locations on a more user-friendly platform (maps.google.com).
