The Federal 1033 Program allows local law enforcement agencies, such as Sheriff's Offices, to receive excess property of the Department of Defense that might otherwise not be utilised. Certain types of this equipment are categorised as "controlled property," which includes items such as small arms and personal weapons, demilitarised vehicles and aircraft, personal protective equipment, and night-vision technology.
Controlled property remains property of, and is accountable to, the Department of Defense. Note that participation in the Federal 1033 Program does not guarantee acquisition of stated property, as all property is on a first-come—first-serve basis with all law enforcement agencies in the forty-nine states (and four United States-owned territories) participating.
The Office of the Sheriff is in discussion to enroll the Ada County Sheriff's Office in the Federal 1033 Program.
