BOYLE ABBEY TOUR:
1st years enjoyed a very informative and enjoyable trip to our local historical site - Boyle abbey . Students learned all about the Cistercian order who founded the monastery and how over time their architecturural style changed and is reflected in the abbey. They also discussed a day in the life of a monk, depending on whether he was a scribe or in the choir and also learned about all of the rooms that once existed there. Thank you so much to our wonderful tour guides on the day. We are very grateful to have an OPW site so close to us.
Cookery:
Ms. McGraths 2nd year students enjoyed making white chocolate and raspberry crumble muffins in Home Economics class. They looked and tasted delicious. Well done to these fabulous students who have developed their cookery skills considerably during this school year.
Big News!
Last week, ACC was awarded the Gaelbhratach for our efforts in promoting the Irish language throughout the school. Our amazing student committee worked tirelessly all year to organise fun, engaging events that brought Irish to life outside the classroom. We’re so proud of this achievement! 🇮🇪
“Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.”
An tseachtain seo caite, bronnadh an Gaelbhratach ar ACC as ár n-iarrachtaí an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn i saol na scoile. D’oibrigh ár gcoiste scoláirí go dícheallach i rith na bliana ag eagrú imeachtaí spraíúla agus spreagúla an Ghaeilge a úsáid taobh amuigh den seomra ranga. Táimid an-bhródúil as an éacht seo! 🇮🇪 “Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.” (R.Seoighe)
Juvenile Connacht Colleges GAA Championship final Abbey Community College 2-14 Mohill Community College 2-11:
What a week for the school yet again, this time on the GAA fields with another trophy for the school cabinet. We unfortunately had to line out without two of our best players this season Barra Conheady and Callum Gavican due to injury, however the strength and depth of our panel showed with their replacements having outstanding games.
ACC shot out of the blocks dominating the opening exchanges, racing into a 0-4 v 0-0 lead. Eoin McQuaid opened the scoring in the 2nd minute and a brilliant solo run from half back. Eoin Kearney followed this up on the 4th min with a beauty from a difficult angle. In the 6th minute Conor Cryan converted a free after a foul on Oisin Carty. ACC missed a number of chances over the next 5 mins with some poor shot selection and a number of shots dropping short. However, Carty came good again in the 12th min with a lovely score after some good work from the impressive Fintan McKeon.
However ACC would soon rue all those missed opportunities as Mohill began to work their way into the game with 3 lovely points in a row. Harry Sheerin decided enough was enough and after some wonderful foot work, broke inside the Mohill half back line, and landed a superb point in the 15th min, to make it ACC 0-5 v Mohill 0-3.
But that would be as good as it got for ACC. Mohill began to dominate around midfield, winning a huge amount of breaking ball, they had a number of runners who weren't getting tracked and they used the ball very wisely. They kicked three points in a row, two of which were goal chances. Mohill then launched a big ball into the square which took an unfortunate bounce to deceive Lenny Chen in goal. Suddenly the score was 0-5 v 1-6 with Mohill very much on top. They closed out the half with two more points to leave the half time score ACC 0-5 v Mohill 1-8.
Some harsh but truthful words were shared during the half time team talk and thankfully it had the desired effect. From the throw up ACC went on the attack and the outstanding Conor Cryan reduced the margin to 5. ACC won the resulting kick out, and after a wonderful flowing move the ball ended up in Donal McDermotts hands and he made no mistake from close range, hammering the ball to the back of the Mohill net. Game on. In the 36th minute McQuaid went on another one of his solo runs, hitting an absolute beauty to reduce the deficit to one. That one point lead was gone by the 37th minute when Carty converted after a wonderful ball from Kearney who was beginning to show his class.
Kearney decided to get in on the act again in the 39th minute with an absolute monster score from about 45m out. 6 points down to a one point lead, what a turnaround. However, Mohill, who had some excellent players, weren't about to give up and they replied with a fine score of their own to make it level again. ACC at this stage were totally dominating around midfield which gave them a brilliant platform for their next 3 scores. In the 43rd minute some fine defending by Mohill resulted in a 45 which Oisin Carty converted. Jack McGarry won the next kickout and slipped a lovely pass to Conor Regan, who moved it quickly to the on rushing Alpheus Anoop who found Kearney in space and he kicked another fantastic score from distance. McQuaid plucked the resulting kick out from the clouds and after some lovely interplay with Kearney and Adam Ferris, Carty found himself running on to a wonderful pass from Domantas Bernatavicius, who was having a fantastic 2nd half, and he made no mistake tucking the ball into the corner and sending the travelling support absolutely wild in the stands.
However, this joy was short lived as Mohill won the next kickout and went straight on the attack which resulted in a goal of their own. Making it ACC 2-12 v Mohill 2- 9. Again they won the next kickout and scored a fine point to put two between the sides with 10mins left. Carty settled things a little in the 52min with a free after a foul on Kearney, who had an unbelievable 2nd half. The remaining minutes were nerve racking with the ACC lads of Luke O Gara, who had his best ever game for ACC, John McGrath, Richie Nally, Cryan and McGarry putting their bodies on the line time and time again to make sure no goal was going in. Oisin Keenehan, who came on in goals for the injured Chen at halftime, was assured with his kickouts and his ability to pick out our players when it counted most in the last few minutes showed maturity beyond his years.
Mohill threw absolutely everything at them and got one back in the 58th minute to reduce it to 2. But again McQuaid managed to get his hands on a kickout and kicked a beautiful pass to man of the match Cryan, who ran at the Mohill defense and was fouled. Carty kicked the free and the ref blew the final whistle, cue scenes of absolute joy from the ACC players and supporters. We did it. What a game and what an amazing comeback from an absolutely brilliant squad of players.

Connacht Champions 2025!
We’ve done it – 1st Year Connacht Champions!!
Full-Time: Abbey C.C. Boyle 4-12 (24) – 2-10 (16) St. Paul’s College, Oughterard
What a journey. What a team. What a finish to a perfect season!
We’re incredibly proud to be able to say it—we are Connacht Champions! Today’s victory caps off an unforgettable year for this exceptional group of 1st Years, who have now gone undefeated all season across both the Roscommon A League and the Connacht Championship.
Adding to our Roscommon A League title, today’s win shows just how far this team has come. However, the success doesn’t stop there—many of the lads on this panel were also part of the group crowned All-Ireland Basketball Champions just a few weeks ago. A serious bunch of talent!
This final had it all—drama, skill, heart, and belief.
St. Paul’s came out of the traps flying with an early goal and point, but we held our nerve. Domantas Bernatavicius and Callum Gavican got us going with important scores before Fintan McKeon lit up the game with a brilliant goal that brought the A.C.C crowd to their feet.
The teams were level 1-7 apiece at the break after a thrilling opening half, but we stepped it up in the second.
Fintan and Niall Tormey nudged us in front with two fine points before Fintan hit the net again with a cracking second goal. St. Paul’s replied with a couple of points, but our lads never let up.
A huge moment came when Sean Leaver was brought on with just over 12 minutes to go—and with his very first touch, he buried a brilliant goal that got everyone believing that today was the day that A.C.C would be crowned 1st Year Connacht Football Champions for the first time since 1992! (Noting that some parents, uncles, and staff members were part of the last 1st year team to win that Connacht title.)
Even after St. Paul’s pulled one back we pushed on again. Ciaran McQuaid, storming up from the back, hit our fourth goal after a fantastic solo run—and that was the one that sealed it.
And just to finish it off, Callum Gavican reintroduced after picking up a knock moments earlier, kicked over two more beautiful points to put the icing on the cake.
Every player gave everything today, and on behalf of the management team, a huge congratulations to them all—and to the support from the sidelines, which was phenomenal as always.
Undefeated. Roscommon League winners. Connacht Champions. All-Ireland basketball champions. What a group. What a year.
Scorers:
Fintan McKeon: 2-4
Callum Gavican: 0-6
Sean Leaver: 1-0
Ciaran McQuaid: 1-0
Domantas Bernatavicius: 0-1
Niall Tormey: 0-1

The second half saw A.C.C. continue their dominance, adding more goals and points to extend their lead. Coláiste Éinde responded with some well-taken scores of their own, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
Special mention to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Oisín Keenehan, who made four point-blank saves to help ensure A.C.C. took home the victory.

U16 Boys Soccer:
Hard luck to our U16 Boys Soccer team who went out of the Connacht A Competition after a very tough battle against an excellent Merlin College Galway.
After the penalty heroics in the previous round, this was another exciting encounter, with the score level at 1-1 after only 90 seconds, when Oisin Carty headed the equaliser after Merlin had gone ahead from kick off. . On 20 mins, Merlin again took the lead with an excellent shot after they cut in from the right wing.
The Abbey lads rallied and got a foothold back in the game and fished out the half well when they got their deserved equaliser through Conor Cryan.
In the second half, Merlin were awarded an early indirect free kick which they converted low into the net. As the Abbey boys continued to push for the equaliser, with Cillian Candon, Ryan McPherson and Conor Cryan going close, Merlin struck with two late goals on the break, to end the Abbey boys season.

School News 24th March 2025
Senior Girls Soccer:
Commiserations to our Senior Soccer girls who were beaten by Urseline Sligo in their Connacht Final today at Gurteen.
A bad start had ACC 2 down after conceding from 2 corners which were turned in by Tara Flynn of Sligo Rovers. . However, they soon settled and played some great football to pull a goal back through Annie O'Connor.
2 great saves by the Urseline keeper, from a Rachel Flynn free kick and a Shauna McGrath shot, kept the Urseline in front.
With 5 mins to go to half time, ACC suffered another blow after a poor clearance fell to McKenzie Reynolds who finished well. A brilliant save by Ciara Cooke kept the game alive just before half time.
Abbey girls came out with a renewed spirit after the break. Constant pressure led to an Amy O'Donohoe finish into the net after a well taken corner. Abbey had some great chances and were not going to go down with a whimper.
In a frantic 6 minutes, Urseline showed why they are perennial Div 1 challengers when they went down to score their 4th a minute later. Urseline got 2 more to make it 6.2.
However, the Boyle girls never gave up and the best 2 goals of the game came their way thanks to the best attacking player on the pitch, Shauna McGrath. Her 1st was a run from inside her own half where she turned inside 2 covering players and finished into the top corner. The 2nd was the finest goal those present will see in years. A shot from just inside her own half sailed over the keeper and into the back of the net.
Abbey continued to push for more and Annie O'Connor and Shauna went close before the final whistle blew.
It wasn't to be for the Abbey girls but they can be very proud of their achievements in making the final. Special mention to Leah, Ada and Ciara who played their last game for the school and were all excellent throughout the 90 minutes.
The rest of the girls will have to dust themselves down for their U17 semi final in the next 2 weeks.
First Year Boys Soccer:
Hard luck to the first year boys soccer team who lost out to The Bish from Galway city in the quarter final of the Connacht A cup today. Played in beautiful sunshine at the Salthill Devon FC complex, the teams were level at 2 - 2 towards the end of the second half when The Bish snuck a goal to take a 3 - 2 lead. Despite dominating possession for the rest of the game and hitting the post twice, ACC couldn't grab an equaliser and ended up conceding another goal with the last kick of the game to finish up on the wrong end of a 4 - 2 scoreline. A talented and committed squad, the boys have done themselves and their school proud with their performances and how they have conducted themselves throughout the year.

Basketball:
Minor and Junior girls basketball pull off the double.
Massive congratulations to our minor and junior girls basketball squads who pulled off a remarkable double today in Bundoran. Our minor girls were up first v St Columbas, Glenties and they displayed some brilliant fast flowing basketball throughout with excellent performances from Clodagh Sweeney, Ruth McGowan, Aoibhinn Cregg and Captain Grace Healy. They ended up comfortable winners on a scoreline of ACC 36 v Glenties 16.
Could the Junior girls match them and do the double? Well it looked in serious doubt for the majority of the game with the girls trailing 12 v 3 after the first quarter to Loreto Community College, Lifford. They reduced the deficit to 4 points in quarter 2, 14 v 10 and it was still 4 points at the end of quarter 3, 19 v 15. Thankfully the girls saved their best till last and they played some excellent basketball on the break and eventually got the win in the end with the game finishing 23 v 25. Not good for the heart. Both teams now look forward to the All Ireland playoffs. Well done to all the girls involved, we are super proud.
Junior and Minor boys do the double.
Our First Years came up against a very skilled Glenties team which pushed us all the way. To the extent they forced a buzzer beater 3 to go to extra time. When the team needed leaderships Thomas Battles, Rory (player of the Game l) Osin Kelly and Domantas guided us home with to a nervy but deserved with 36 to 32 A great achievement.
The second years having waited their turn went after a spirited Ballyshannon side and raced to a 20 to 10 half time lead. Some excellent play for Donal McDermot, Harry Sheerin, Thomas and Domantas stepping up all year. While there were some individual excellent performance everyone contributed to a win. For these lads that’s a First Year and Second Year double for them and it’s a credit to their character they way they have performed for the school.
Amazing young men
We look forward to All Ireland Playoffs for both sides.
Connacht Chess Cup:

Boys Rugby:
Semi Final place secured with a game to go. One of the best performances of the season our lads ran in 12 Try’s Rory 3, Thomas 2, Oisin Carthy 2, Domantas 1, Jack McGarry 1, Harrison 1, Callum 2. The performance had it all strength, skill and it was a very enjoyable game. While the try’s were one aspect there was some amazing skill on display with Rory and Oisin bringing an excellent kicking game to add more strings to a growing bow. Forwards Callum growing as leader was excellent in facilitating other players in particular Nicolas and Domantas who had very impressive games. One of our finds of the season is Thomas Battles at 9 who was excellent again today and even went to 10. A natural he now has more try’s than games played. In the back line Rory and Jack again proving a dynamic partnership were excellent. Every player contributed and we look forward to our final group games and hopefully a home semi final. Well done to our U17 girls who defeated St. Louis Kiltimagh in the Connacht quarter final today. Abbey CC got off to a great start with two brilliant goals from Rachel Flynn and Annie O’Connor in the 5th & 6th minute. St. Louis settled into the game but another great goal from Rachel Flynn (18 mins), a joint effort from Amy O’Donoghue & Cáitlín Kennedy (34 Mins) and another from Amy O’Donoghue (39 Mins) allowed the home side to lead 5-0 at half time. St. Louis worked hard in the second half to finish on a score line of 5-2. An excellent team effort with every member of the panel enjoying game time today. Well done to all of the players on a comprehensive win. We wish them the best of luck in their semi final in the coming weeks.
U16 Boys Soccer:
Our U16 Boys Soccer team had an excellent win away to Colaiste Mhuire Mhathair in Galway this week. After going a goal down against the run of play, Conor Cryan evened it up in the 1st half when he managed to beat the keeper to a through ball and rounded a defender to finish into the top corner.
Abbey continued to push on, but after full time and extra time, couldn't break the deadlock.
It was left to Eoin Kearney to play a hero's role with 3 top class penalty saves to help win the game for Abbey. Ryan Healy and Oisin Carty held their nerves to score the Abbey penalties.
Boys Basketball:
Our First Years took on St Tiernan’s today in an excellent semi final. While this was an excellent team performance that’s seen us come out on top hitting 48 points in the process. Thomas Battles soon to be representing Boyle on the LLR U14 team in Limerick, Callum Gavican, Rory and Oisin Keenehan all had exceptional games. Player to the match Conor Casey was superb and showed all aspects of his game. The boys march on to play in the regional final on the 20th well done to the lads it’s a great achievement back to back first year finals.
2nd Year Boys Basketball:
Having watched one of the best displays of the season our second years took on a very strong and skill full St Tiernans team and played some of their best basketball in the first half to secure a spot in the final as well. While it was a huge team effort with players such as Domantus, Harry Sheerin, Conor Cryan and Dylan McDermott all leading from the front. However Callum Gavican playing his second game and Eoin Kearney were outstanding down the stretch to bring it home. Back to back finals for these lads and a first and second year double to look forward to. Well done to all and their coach Mr Flynn

Senior Girls Soccer:
Congratulations to our Senior Girls soccer team who overcame a strong Davitt College Castlebar in the semi final of the Connacht Cup.
In only the school's 2nd year in the higher division, the girls played some great football to get into an early lead. Goals from Shauna McGrath, Annie O'Connor and Leah McCawley gave the ACC girls an early advantage.
Davitt struck back before half time with 2 good goals but Amy O'Donohoe relieved the pressure with a well taken finish before half time.
Playing with the wind in the 2nd half, Abbey CC continued to play well, with Emma Duggan and Rachel Flynn dominating midfield. Captain Ciara Byrne also lead by example alongside Ada Conheady, Georgina Wynne and Aoife O'Donohoe cutting out the Davitt attacks to keep them at bay.
Some fine saves from Anna Carty who played through pain with a sprained finger, also helped get her team over the line. Lauren McQuaid pitched in with a fine goal in the 2nd half while Aisling Cooke, Caitlin Kennedy and Grace McCawley also did very well.
They will now meet the winners of the Mercy or Ursuline, Sligo in the final!

Boys Soccer:
St Nathys 1-2 Abbey CC
Our U16 Boys Soccer team got their Div 1 Connacht competition off to a winning start with a battle against St Nathys at Gurteen today.
St Nathys went ahead against the run of play with a well worked corner. Abbey then pushed hard and were rewarded with a great equaliser from Eoin McQuaid to leave it 1.1 at half time.
St Nathys came out the stronger in 2nd half and but for a great save from Eoin Kearney, the Abbey lads could have been behind for a second time.
With 10 minutes to go, after good play from Conor Cryan down the left, Ryan McPherson broke through and his powerful shot was too much for Naylor in the Nathys goals.
Some resolute defending from John McGrath, Colm Lavin and Donal McDermott kept the score at 2.1 to see Abbey through to the next round where they face CMM.

Second Year Retreat-
A students perspective,
In our second year retreat we learned about faith and happiness and many other topics surrounding this. To follow up we did activities which were fun and entertaining, such as guessing the thing by the symbols! Our speakers were Andrew and Laura from Tobar Nua. They did an amazing job at the storytelling and explaining of the different topics.
The part that stood out to me the most was Laura’s story and how she turned to God, she expressed how she felt God with her in a time of illness. My personal favourite was the part of the retreat was the games, they were interesting to take part in and watch.
My recommendations for next year's retreat would be to talk more about the actual meaning of faith and what it means to be faithful to someone or something, as this sector of the retreat lacked meaning. My faith has stayed the same after the retreat and I feel as though it was not affected in any way.
I thoroughly enjoyed the activities and events surrounding the retreat and I would do it again.

3rd Year Retreat - A students voice:
Dear Roscommon Herald,
For a school trip earlier this week, I went to a place in Co. Mayo called Knock and while I was there I was pleasantly surprised by the area.
First of all I didn't think I'd see a huge building like the Knock Basilica or the Massive 1.5 million tile mosaic. I also didn't know that Pope John Paul II or Pope Francis visited Knock but now I know that a small area in the middle of Ireland was visited by 2 of the most famous people in modern history.
I had a lovely time in Knock, its a grand spot out there and I even brought back a souvenir, Holy Water.
I would 100% recommend Knock to tourists of all ages.
Sincerely,
Matthew Mullooly

The students were as ever well prepared for their musical contribution to the liturgy with a particular highlight being the psalm sung by Anna, 'To make you feel my love' at the offertory by fifth years, the communion hymn 'The Water is Wide' by first years and then a beautiful rendition of 'Heal the world' by leaving certs Grace, Ciara and Teegan.
