Big Congrats to our 3rd year student Isobelle Harding winning her silver medal in hip/hop dance All irelands recently held in the Sands Hotel in Limerick.

2nd Year Basketball:

Heartbreak for our 2nd year girls basketball squad in the All Ireland basketball playoffs.

On Tuesday it was the turn of our 2nd year girls to attempt to make the All Ireland semi when they travelled to Ballinfoyle in Galway to play Colaiste na Coiribe (hosts), Loreto Balbriggan and Cnoc Mhuire Granard.

Game 1

ACC 20 v Colaiste na Coiribe 17

Game 2

ACC 42 v Cnoc Mhuire Granard 14

Game 3

In our final game v Loreto Balbriggan we knew a victory would guarantee us a place in the semi final. We started the game convincingly racing into a 12 v 4 lead after quarter 1. We maintained our 8 point lead in quarter 2 finishing 18 v 10 up. Unfortunately in quarter 3 disaster stuck when we lost, player of the tournament, Katie Conroy to an ankle injury and almost immediately after this we lost Teresa F Santos to a head injury. Balbriggan gained confidence and won the quarter 5 v 11 to leave the score 23 v 21 going into the fourth and final quarter.

The fourth quarter was not good for the nerves with Balbriggan dominating and going into a 27 v 23 lead. However the girls showed great skill and determination to fight back and with only 6 seconds left on the clock Holly Fitzhenry scored from the free throw line to give us a one point lead. Balbriggan raced down the court, with time nearly up, and threw a hail Mary from just inside the half way, to score an absolute fluke and win the game 30 v 27. To say we were devastated would be an understatement, what a horrible way to lose the game.

This result meant that 3 teams, ACC, Colaiste na Coiribe and Balbriggan all finished with 2 wins and 1 defeat. The calculators came out and score difference would decide who goes forward to the All Ireland semifinals. That team was Colaiste na Coiribe. Heartbreak.

While this final result was disappointing the girls can holds their heads high after having a fantastic season where they played 8 games, won 7 lost 1. We are really proud of their efforts throughout the year and the future of basketball is bright in ACC with girls like this in our school. Well done girls.

U16 Boys Soccer:

ACC U16 Boys bowed out of the Connacht A Soccer competition in the most agonising fashion.

Playing away to the much fancied Colaiste na Corribe, they fought hard across the 80 minutes of normal time to finish 0-0. Both goal keepers were exceptional with the Galway keeper pulling off a brilliant save from Ryan McPherson, while ACC stopper, Conor Cooke also made 2 excellent saves to keep us in the game.

Extra time proved fruitless for both teams and the cruel penalties were inevitable as both teams matched each other for class and determination. Owen McNamara and Darragh Lee were superb at the back while Ryan Healy and Brìon O'Dowd ran themselves ragged in midfield.

It was unlucky for Abbey CC though as the Galway school went through 5-4 winners.

That ends what has been an excellent debut season at A level and we look forward to making further progress against the big guns next season.

U16 Boys Rugby:

The U16 boys' rugby team from Abbey Community College showcased remarkable talent and sportsmanship at the recent rugby blitz. Demonstrating excellent teamwork and strategic acumen, they played exceptionally well across multiple matches. Each player contributed to the team's impressive performance, which not only highlighted their skills but also exemplified the spirit and values of Abbey Community College. Their efforts on the field were a proud representation of their school, earning them accolades from spectators and fellow competitors alike. The team's dedication and hard work were evident, making their school community extremely proud of their achievements. Well done from coaches Mr Costello and Mr Mac Rory.

North West Basketball Champions 🎉🎉🎉

The boys don't do things the easy way!. Trailing most of the game, Conor Cryan stepped up to hit a clutch free throw to draw the game in normal time 29 to 29 with less than a second left on the clock. We forced extra time having played second fiddle most of the game. Harry Sheerin, Eoin Kearney and Conor Cryan guided us to a victory over a very strong St Attractas team. A very spirited performance and we want to thank all the officials and the Mercy for having us down. Well done boys, excellent job. The team improving all the time were excellent from the start of the to the end. Eoin Harry Conor and Donal all playing well throughout. Special mention to Alpheaus who was very good in his roll. Second Year Boys Basketball:

From Joy to Heartbreak. The Second Year boys lost out by one point in the last second with the last shot to come up short on a scoreline of 29 to 30. Leading coming down the stretch nerves and bad luck got us. We weren't without star performances Darragh Lee was exceptional throughout physical and hard working he set the tempo with John McGrath Colm Lavin and Nirav all contributing with notable efforts. Conor Cryan out first year in his second game had another fine display which contributed to a pulsating finish. Our efforts didn't get the rewards we deserved, however our boys played with character which is a great reflection on them and the school. We wish st Tiernans the very best in the final. Well done on a great season.

School News 8th March 2024

U16 Boys Progress to Connacht Quarter Final GAA:

Our U16 Boys had an excellent win of heavy weights St Gerald's Castlebar in the last 16 of the Connacht A cup today.

The Abbey lads settled well into the game but went down to a good move after St Gerald's the  Captain shot for outside the box into bottom corner.

The Mayo school took control for large spells and it wasn't until Kyle Tighe rose to head home an excellent Cillian Candon corner, that Abbey got back into the game. They finished the half well going into the break 1.1.

The 2nd half saw Abbey CC take the game to St Geralds. Tom Robertson and Ryan McPherson went close. However, one of the moments of the game came when Owen McNamara saved with his head brilliantly to deny St Gerald's. From the resulting corner, Abbey switched off and conceded a soft goal with only 7 minutes to play.

With the game nearly over, one of Abbey's best performers, Ryan Healy spun and beat 3 players before finishing calmly into the bottom corner.

Extra time couldn't separate the teams and it took 3 supurb saves from Conor Cooke with clinical penalties from Ryan Healy, Brìon O'Dowd, Kelvin Gaffney, and Ryan McPherson to send Abbey into the quarter finals.

U14 Girls GAA:

Well done to our U14 girls football team who defeated Scoil Mhuire Strokestown in the final round of the group stages today. This result sees our girls top their group and progress to the next stage of the competition.

First Year Boys Basketball:

Our First Year boys have made it 4 from 4. The took on ballinrobe in essentially a quarter final to progress. After a slow start the team got going with some extra Barker's from Eoin Kearney and Harry Sheerin to have a narrow advantage at half time. However our boys hit their stride in the 3rd with Conor Cryan taking the game to the opposition aided by Bara and  Dylan. We got a good result which means we move onto semi finals next week. Thanks to Noah and Mr Flynn for the coaching.

Second Year Boys Basketball:

Our second years, having watched the first years play some free flowing basketball, took a while to get into their stride. Trailing after the first quarter Ryan McPhearson John McGrath and Nirav showed great quality to take control of the game. And give us the advantage In a back and forth game Conor Cryan stepped up from our first year team to provide a spark with his tireless work rate and excellent passing which allowed Colm Lavin John, Ryan Healy and Ryan McPherson pick up good baskets. That's makes it 4 from 4 and we progress to the semi final next week. Well done to all as we get back to practice.

2nd year girls Basketball:

After watching the first year girls put in a great performance our second year girls were determined to follow suit. They also wanted revenge having lost to St Attracta's Tubbercurry in the group and regional final last year. The girls knew they had to be at their best from the first whistle and that is exactly what they were. Katie Conroy was at her brilliant best throughout and opened the scoring with a lovely lay up following a fast break. Teresa followed this up with a brilliant drive to the basket, scoring and getting fouled. She nailed her free throw to give us a 5-0 lead. The next two baskets came from St Attracta's, and the excellent Rachel Frain, who reminded us of her ability. But Teresa soon got to grips with her putting in a defensive master class from then on. Holly Fitzhenry hit a lovely basket from just inside the three point line and Katie followed it up with another beauty to leave the score 9 v 4 after quarter 1.

The second quarter proved to be a very tight affair with the Abbey girls creating loads of opportunities, but struggling to score. Orlaith scored a nice basket after catching a rebound and Emma Caslin scored a brilliant individual basket driving to the boards and making her lay up. The impressive Siofra McGuinness from St Attracta replied with 2 baskets of her own to finish the quarter 4 points each and a lead of 13 v 8 for the Abbey girls.

At half time the girls talked about focusing on winning the next quarter and they did just that, winning it 8 V 4 playing some brilliant basketball with scores from Lily O Shaughnessy, Katie (4) and Teresa leading 21 v 12.

This 9 point lead gave the girls great confidence going into quarter 4 and it showed as they played their best basketball of the match. 4 points from Lily O Shaughnessy and 2 from the free throw line from Teresa at the start of the quarter developed confidence further. St Attracta replied with 6 points from Frain and McGuinness (4) but Katie (4) and Teresa (2) finished off the scoring to leave the final score Abbey CC 33 v St Attracta's 18. Well done to all the girls and next up on Tuesday 27th is a winner takes all game v Mercy College Sligo.

1st year Girls Basketball:

Game 3 in our group stages was v St Attracta's Tubbercurry on Thursday Feb 22nd. This was our first time playing at home and the extra support added to some pre game nerves. The opening quarter was a low scoring tight affair, with both defenses on top. Shayla Lannon opened the scoring with a lovely lay up which seemed to settle the girls and they went on to hit a further 6 points from Katie (2) and Blathnaid (4) to leave the score 8 V 0.

The second quarter was also very close with little between the teams. Two lovely baskets from Georgina in quick succession gave the girls more confidence and they closed out the quarter with a brilliant counter attack score from Freya to leave the half time score 14 v 0.

In the 3rd quarter Tubbercurry really came out fighting knowing they needed to get back into the game quickly. They hit two great scores from distance and one from the free throw line to get back into the game. However the Abbey girls started to find their groove again and hit the next 6 points from Ciara Cooke (2), Blathnaid (2) and Freya (2) to leave the score 20 v 6 going into the 4th and final quarter.

The game was really decided early in the 4th quarter when Blathnaid scored two brilliant baskets. All of the girls in the squad got game time and they closed out the game with scores from Klara, Blathnaid and Amy. Final score Abbey CC 30 v St Attracta's Tubbercurry 13. Well done girls and next up is Mercy College Sligo on Tuesday February 27th.

1st and 2nd year Girls Basketball teams make it to the Regional Finals:

A massive congratulations to our 1st and 2nd year girls basketball teams who have qualified for the regional finals on March 19th by defeating the Mercy College, Sligo on Tuesday.

The first year girls game turned out to be a nail biter, and not good for the nerves, with very little between the teams. While the 1st quarter was dominated by the Abbey girls with great scores from Katie Flanagan (4) and Shayla Lannon (4) to give us an 8 v 1 lead, the second was dominated by the Mercy winning it 2 v 6 with our only basket coming from Georgina Flynn. Half time 10 v 7 and all to play for.

Quarter 3 couldn't be any closer finishing with 6 points each with baskets from POTM Shayla (2) Blathnaid (2) and Freya (2) to leave the score 16 v 13 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

The Mercy flew out of the blocks in quarter 4, getting a basket and free throw to make it 16 v 16. However Freya responded with 2 great scores from the free throw line to give the girls some breathing space again. This didn't last long however with the girls on team fouls and the Mercy making 3 points from the free throw line. Thankfully the Mercy were as fond of fouling as we were, resulting in them getting team fouls also and Blathnaid hitting one from the free throw line to make it 19 v 18. We lose Blathnaid and Freya to personal fouls. Shayla hits one from the free throw line and the Mercy responds with a great basket to make it 20 v 20. Shayla hits another from a free throw but the Mercy again respond with a basket to go into the lead for the first time in the match 21 v 22 with time running out. However the girls would not be denied, a brilliant score by Katie put us back in the lead and Shayla gets another from a free throw, 24 v 22. With only seconds remaining the Mercy reduces it to 1 and its panic stations. However Ciara Cooke wins the ball and runs the length of the court to score a brilliant lay up to give us a 3 point cushion with 3 seconds on the clock. The final whistle blows which sends the Abbey girls into wild celebrations. What a win, final score 26 v 23.

Having just watched the 1st year girls qualify for the final, the 2nd year girls were determined to make it a double and they did so in style winning 37 v 14. They clearly didn't fancy leaving it to the final quarter like the 1st years, and raced into a 16 v 0 lead in the first quarter with Katie Conroy on fire with 8 points and Lily O Shaughnessy (4), Holly Fitzhenry (2) and Orlaith Callaghan (2). In the second quarter the girls continued their dominance with baskets from Grainne Sweeney (2), Teresa (2) and Lillie Carty (2) while conceding only 2 leaving us with a half time lead of 22 v 2.

The girls continued their brilliant basketball in quarter 3 with a further 15 points Katie (7), Holly (4), Teresa (2) and Grainne (2) leaving it 37 v 5. The final quarter allowed all members of the squad to get game time and while the Mercy won the quarter 0 v 9 the girls still played some lovely basketball. Well done girls, and best of luck on March 19th in the regional final with the opponent and venue still to be confirmed.

Exciting Junk Kouture Update:

Huge congratulations to 5th year student Caoimhe Reilly who has made it through to regional finals of Junk Kouture in March in the Helix with her creation 'Shear Power'

‘Shear Power’ symbolises a deeper relationship and power between ourselves and the tranquility of the world around us. Nature inspires creativity in today’s youth inspiring us to to explore art. The intricate design employs the use of weaving, crochet and knitting. The use of these techniques symbolise the serenity associated with nature, as the crocheted string and panels resemble the twisting and entangling of vines, demonstrating how people can become one with the world surrounding us and take inspiration from nature around us to inspire creativity within us.

Watch this space for further updates on Caoimhes journey.

1st Year Girls Basketball:

Our 1st year girls basketball team had another convincing win in the North West schools competition, this time V Mohill. The opening quarter team of Katie (4) Georgina (6), Colette (2), Ciara C (2) and Blathnaid were on fire with Georgina scoring 3 baskets in a row at the very start of the game giving them great confidence. They continued to play some brilliant fast breaks resulting in a lead of 0 v 14. The 2nd quarter proved to be a little closer with Mohill getting some nice scores. However the team of Shayla, Sophie B (2), Klara (2), Ciara T and Freya (4) continued to work the score board finishing the quarter with 2 lovely baskets to leave the half time score 6 v 22. The 3rd quarter team of Katie(4), Georgina (4), Ciara C, Blathnaid and Freya (2) were slow to get into their groove with Mohill getting the opening 4 points. But once they got to grips with their new positions, they started to find space, moving the ball quickly and getting some fantastic scores at the end to leave the score 6 v 32. The fourth and final quarter team of Sophie B (2), Sophie McDermottroe, Amy, Lily and Ciara T put in a great performance to close out the game. Final score Mohill Community College 10 v Abbey Boyle 34. Next up will be St Attracta's, Tubbercurry on Feb 22nd.

2nd Year Girls Basketball:

Next up in Mohill was the 2nd year girls basketball team who had a very close game here last year. They were really determined to put in a great performance and come away with the win. This determination was in full flow in quarter 1 with Lily O (2), Orlaith (2), Holly (2), Katie (6) and Aoibhinn defending brilliantly and hitting Mohill on the break to race into a 2 v 12 lead. Quarter 2 the girls put on a master class of shooting and rebound play with Grainne (10) on fire under the boards and Teresa (7) controlling  the game from the centre. Amy (2), Aisling, and Emma ensured Mohill were constantly under pressure and they finished the quarter giving us a great lead of 10 v 31. While the scoring in quarter 3 slowed down Lillie Carty (2) Orlaith (2) and Katie (5) made sure we still won the quarter by 6 v 9 to set us up nicely going into the final 7mins. Chloe Gilligan, Clodagh Healy, Tara Duignan, Annaliese and Lillie C closed out the game with some wonderful to leave the final score Mohill 22 v ACC Boyle 42. Well done girls and next up is our biggest challenge v defending champions St Attracta's Tubbercurry on Feb 22nd.

Two tries in the second half for abbey would have made it a contest, but for the first half blitz by Ballina seen them come out deserved winners 44 -10. Well done to our 1st year boys football team who defeated a strong Strokestown team in the Roscommon schools A competition in Strokestown on Wednesday. ACC started the game really well and raced into an early 2-1 v 0-0 lead by the 4th minute. The goals coming from Oisin Carty and Eoin Kearney and a beautiful point from Donal McDermott. The next score of the game came in the 12th minute, with a beautiful goal from Oisin Carty after some great interplay from Barra Conheady, Harry Sheerin and Conor Cryan. Strokestown never gave up and rattled in 2 goals in the 25th and 28th minute to get back into the game. However, a Conor Cryan goal and another Carty point finished off the half nicely, leaving the half time score ACC 6-4 v Strokestown 3-2.

Strokestown really came out fighting in the 2nd half and had 2-1 on the board before ACC replied with a Carty 1-1. Both teams emptied their benches as the half wore on and while ACC added a further 1-2 (Kearney 0-1, Cryan 1-0, Carty 0-1) Strokestown replied with a fine 2-1 leaving the final scoreline ACC 8-8 v Strokestown 7-4. Unfortunately, Carrick equalised with a well taken free kick to make it honours even. Thanks to Boyle Celtic FC for the use of their new astro facility, and the green kit after a clash of colours. The U19s next game will be in 2 weeks against the local rivals Coola PPS. Best of luck to all our senior players in their upcoming GAA finals for Eastern Harps, St Michael's and Elphin/Ballinameen.

Senior Girls Soccer:

Abbey CC senior soccer team lost to an agonising last min winner to Mercy Roscommon in Lisnamult.  After going 2 goals down against the run of play, the Abbey girls got themselves back into the game with Amy O'Donohoe and Rachel Flynn getting the goals to draw level. The cliche of being vulnerable after scoring, came to haunt us as last years Connacht champions scored their third with a minute to go. Right at the death the Mercy cleared one over the bar to give away a corner. Abbey went close from the corner with a shot blocked and Annie O'Connor aimed the rebound into the corner but the excellent Aisling Shanagher got down to save just as the final whistle blew. Next up for the Abbey girls is Gortnor Abbey next Friday.

Gaisce Awards:

Two fifth year students, Anna McGrath and Caoimhe Reilly received their Gaisce Bronze Award today from Gasice Leader, Ms Cronin. Two of the three skills had to be completed for 13 weeks each and the third skill had to be completed for 26 weeks. It takes a lot of commitment to complete all the activities and keep a log of weekly progress, so well done girls. Any TYs interested in participating in Gasice this year can contact Ms Cronin for more information.
