Young SVP:
The focus of our Young SVP group is social awareness .We are doing this to bring awareness of poverty and other issues that may problems throughout Ireland. We have done various activities that highlighted our aims as a group. We work well as a group of TY student interacting and work together with the LCA students to make all this possible. The Ty side of the project was the breakfast club, while the LCA students ran their own social awareness campaign. We came together as a group to run the easter project working with students from the AbbeySuite and MLU. We brainstormed and produced the idea together, making the group come closer together, as we work well together. It was a great show of teamwork. This project stemmed from the befriending pillar of Young SVP.
On Monday we gathered at lunchtime and bought Easter theme supplies for our small campaign. The children designed and decorated a variety of easter theme art projects. This ranges from colouring sheets to decorating easter egg. It helped the students to express their creativity and create new skills. We organized the committee into two groups and did the activity for a few weeks, swapping each week. This was completed over lunch time, it brought attention to the easter time which is alomost upon us.

The intricate design employs the use of weaving, crochet and knitting. The use of these techniques symbolise the serenity associated with nature, as the crocheted string and panels resemble the twisting and entangling of vines, demonstrating how people can become one with the world surrounding us and take inspiration from nature around us to inspire creativity within us. The design was made by Caoimhe Reilly And Saoirse Supple.

In the afternoon, they first visited Vannes with our French guide,Marie. Then they had free time to do some shopping and practiced their French. before returning to their families.
Wednesday 1st of March
Today was the beginning of the 3 day Model United Nations conference. From Ireland , we have sent 2 delegations, one from the Democratic Republic of Congo, one from Senegal. Being both francophone countries, both Daire Scott and Oisin Mc Dermot completed their opening speeches in French. Over the next 2 days, they will be in talks with fellow delegates drafting resolutions to the Sustainable Development Goal 11:Sustainable cities and communities.
Thursday 2nd of March
Early morning for our 2 delegations to finalise the resolutions to the Goal 11 with their fellow delegates from the other countries.
Afternoon was spent in Assembly. Conan Cregg and Frankie Lew were the ambassadors of Senegal. Katelyn Roddy and Leonie Wynne were the ambassadors of The Republic of Congo. Using papers, they engaged in negotiations amongst the countries to finalise the text containing all the G11 resolutions. Informal discussions took place between countries in stairs, in corridors, etc. Students learned to be diplomats and negotiators. Then, the ambassadors had only 2 minutes to consult with their country delegates to decide if they would accept or not the text. All the countries, except Norway did not approve the text!
At the end of the day, delegates were back in groups to work on the Goal 10: reduce inequalities.
Mot d'ordre: delegations need to learn to compromise.
A great day! There are certainly future politicians in the group!

They worked tirelessly over the past number of months giving encouragement, praise , advice and drawing out the amazing result we saw displayed on stage over the past week. Congratulations to students of Ursuline College Sligo, Summerhill College Sligo, Abbey Community College Boyle, Elphin Community College, Scoil Mhuire Strokestown, CBS Roscommon, Coláiste Mhuire Ballygar, St. Cuan's College Castleblakney and Coláiste Chiaráin Athlone and adult volunteers of Drumcliffe, Maugherow, Rosses Point, St. Joseph's & Calry, Croghan, Tulsk and Castlerea parishes on their completion of two Educational Days with Trócaire personnel, Jane Mellett, Stephen Farley and Niamh Morris, as part of the Elphin Diocese's Lenten Youth Ambassador initiative. The Educational Days were undertaken in Kilbride Community Centre, Roscommon on Wednesday 8th February and Summerhill College Sligo on Thursday 9th February.
During the coming Lenten season the one hundred and thirty students that participated will seek to build on their learning and interaction by increasing awareness of the great work undertaken by Trócaire and other Aid agencies in their school and or parish communities.
Here in Ireland many of us appreciate our good fortune. How lovely that our schools and parishes, with the support of diocese, remain mindful of those for whom this is a perilous, frighening and extremely demanding time.
Marti Avellanet, Charlie Cooney, Aoibhe Morahan, Anne Kennedy and Joanna Peraguda attended, and were accompanied by Ms. Moynihan.. They took part in Trocaire workshops delivered by Miamh Morris and Steven Farley . It is hoped these Lenten ambassadors will take part in promoting the work that Trocaire do and promoting the work of the Laudato Si movement. Well done to our Transition Year Students.
U17 Boys Soccer:
Commiserations to our U17 Boys who were beaten 4.3 AET in the Connacht B final at Ballisodare on Friday.
Abbey boys went into the lead early with a well taken goal from Alex Lillie. St Joseph's Charlestown then took the lead with 2 quick goals before half time. Captain Edwin George responded in the second half with an equaliser before more pressure lead to Brion O'Dowd putting Abbey into the lead with 15 mins left. With 7 mins normal time remaining St Joseph's equalised again with a clinical counter attack, forcing extra time.
After more pressure from Abbey and a few missed chances, St Joseph's got their winner from the penalty spot with 4 mins of extra time remaining.
Heart break for the Abbey lads who played some excellent football with Liam Higgins the stand out among many good performances.
Congratulations to St Joseph's who now represent the province in the National semi final in 2 weeks.

U17 Boys Soccer:
ACC through to 2nd Connacht Final in 5 Days.
Healy leads the way.
Abbey CC U17 boys booked their place in the Connacht B final with a 3.2 victory over the much fancied Glenamaddy CS. The Galway school were U15 National champions last year and cake into the game as favourites.
That favourites tag was backed up with them going into the lead after only 8 minutes. A tap in from 2 yards after a brilliant Shane O'Dowd Penalty save put the Glen lads 1.0 up.
3 minutes later, ACC captain Edwin George cut the Glenamaddy defence open with a wonderful pass to Alex Lillie who took it around the keeper and slotted home from a narrow angle.
ACC settled into the game and started to pass the ball but fell asleep with 32 mins gone when they let Glenamaddy punish them from a corner. Abbey went into half time knowing they had caused a lot of their undoing, a goal behind.
In times of adversity, leaders come to the fore. 6 minutes into the 2nd half, just as the ACC substitutes predicted, up stepped Aaron Healy to send a free kick into the top corner from outside the box, leaving the game locked at 2.2.
Abbey had 2 great chances with Alex Lillie and Alex Oates going close but with 7 minutes remaining, Alex Lillie chased down a long pass from Aaron Healy. Lillie was taken down by the keeper giving the referee no option but to point fir a penalty.
Aaron Healy appeared the calmest man on the field while many couldn't even watch, and rifled his effort low to his left sending ACC through to the final.
It has been a great week in ACC football as both the U17 girls and U17 boys have both qualified for the Connacht final.

Junior D Ladies’ Quarter Final – Match Report
By Anna McGrath
On a cold wintery December day, our Junior D ladies took to the pitch in St.Croans of Ballintubber to play a tough Coláiste Mhuire Ballygar side in the quarter final. Both teams won all their games in the group stage so it was bound to be a challenging game that would test both teams. The weather conditions weren’t favorable for any side with a cold breeze and dew-covered grass leading to slippery conditions.
Ballygar got the game off to a good start with a well converted free in the third minute. ACC worked hard but just couldn’t get the ball past the Ballygar defense. The first goal of the game came from the Ballygar side one minute later. ACC had to make their first substitution of the match after Ellen McDonagh sustained an injury which just five minutes played. Rosin Costello came in for Ellen McDonagh in the full back position. Ballygar once again added to their score line as they got two points and a goal in the space of the next fourteen minutes. ACC had many opportunities to score in this half but with a crowded back line and the Ballygar defense very much on song, left it next to impossible to get the ball through the posts on any of these occasions. And in turn, ACC’s backline made it very difficult for the Ballygar side to score and with pressure and patience, they kept Coláiste Muire out of the scoring zone on several occasions in the first half. Ballygar finished the first half with another goal and a point which left the half-time score,
ACC 0:0 - Coláiste Muire Ballygar 3:4
As the second half began, you could see that ACC were not ready to let the game go yet. Ballygar scored the first point of the second half two minutes in. ACC made their second substitution a minute later by replacing Ugne Padamansakatie for Katie Sharkey. Grace McCawley took up the mid-field position while Katie Sharkey went into the forward line. ACC’s “never say die” attitude saw Rachel Flynn score a free to get ACC onto the score board. Two minutes later, Ballygar added two fine points after some great passages of play. ACC were denied there first goal when Annie O’Connor hit the cross bar and Aoife O’Donnell caught the rebound but unfortunately was crowded out as the Ballygar defense quickly reacted to the danger. The possession went back and forth between both teams
History Talk with Tomi Reichental:
3rd and 5th year history students got the opportunity to engage in a zoom call with holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental. Tomi and his family were taken to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944 and were there until it was liberated by the British 1945. Over 30 members of his family were killed. Students got to about what life was like for Jewish people in Czechoslovakia before the nazi occupation. Tomi moved to Ireland in 1959 but did not speak about his experiences for nearly 50 years. Thank you to Tomi for taking the time to talk to us and thank you to the history department, especially Mr Seoighe for organising the talk

Junior D Girls GAA-14th November
Abbey Community College Vs Elphin Community College
Throw in was at 9:50, it was a lovely sunny morning but the pitch was wet and there was a thin layer of morning dew over the grass in Orchard Park. ACCs captain for the day was wing-forward Rachel Sheerin.
ACC won the throw in and kept possession for the first few minutes until the first free of the match was won and taken by Julianne Moore which set Rachel Flynn on her way to get the opening point. This was closely followed by a goal, a second score from Rachel Flynn. Many impressive turnovers were made by our half backs, Rachel Carroll, Julianne Moore and Riadh Casey. In Elphin’s first scoring opportunity, their full forward scored an off balance point in the 21st minute. Straight after that, our goalkeeper Rachel Sweeney made a super save and set up passages of play further up the pitch. ACC continued to keep the score board ticking over with many goals and points. The score at half time was ACC 7-6 Elphin 0-2.
3 ACC substitutions were made at half time. Facing into the sun after the break meant we had to work much harder to maintain our great lead until the final whistle. The opening score of the second half was a super goal from Georgina Wynne. Our captain Rachel Sheerin and Rachel Flynn continued to add to their impressive score tally throughout the second half, with more goals from Amy O’Donoghue and Annie O’Connor. Our backline did well to keep Elphin out even with the sun in their eyes. We were unfortunate to let in 3 goals towards the end of the second half when Elphin started to build momentum but our work rate in midfield and the half back line restricted them to 3 goals and a point. Final score: ACC 18-7 Elphin 3-3
Match report by Roisin Costello (2nd year)

Girls Rugby:
Match report written by Lily Commons and Joanna Pergoda, November 2022.
The ACC Junior rugby girls team played St Mary's Ballina in Wednesday16th November. The game was an away match for the ACC girls. The match kicked off at 12:10 p.m. and the game was 10 aside for the first half. Early on St Mary's took the lead and the ACC girls were under pressure. It wasn't looking good for the Boyle girls but great defence was made and they did not give up. A while into the first half Julianne Moore scored a fantastic try but the conversion was missed. Minutes after Georgina Wynne scores another wonderful try, yet again without a successful conversion. At halftime the score ended up being 18:10 to St. Mary's. In the second half the game became 15 aside. St Mary's are still in the lead but the Boyle girls are not accepting defeat and still trying their hardest putting in brilliant tackles. Coming near the end Adriana Berzansha scores a fabulous try and Grace McCawley gets an excellent conversion. The girls sadly lost but the team spirit is still in them. Final score 47:17 in favour of St Mary's.
With thanks to coaches Mr. Costello and Ms. Farnell for all their work

inaugural Computer Science Showcase:
Leaving Certificate Computer Science students Rylan Lochner, Keelan O'Dowd and Arianna Lannon attended the inaugural Computer Science Showcase today at the Athlone Springs Hotel with their Computer Science Teacher Ms. Cronin. The invitation only event was established as part of Ireland's first Computer Science week. Students from a small number of primary and secondary schools and third level colleges attended to promote the subject and demonstrate their learning and experience of the subject. Various companies such as Amazon, IBM and Ericsson were also present on the day. Rylan, Keelan and Arianna were showcasing Python programming, and demonstrated an agriculture themed programme completed in class to calculate fertiliser requirements based on soil tests and field size. They spoke with a number of teachers and lecturers throughout the day. They also participated in a workshop led by lecturers from TUD and software engineers from IBM where they were working on coding for miniature drones. A great experience for all and we hope to return next year.
U-16 Girls Basketball:
Our u16 girls' basketball team played their third game of the season away to Sligo Grammer on Monday October 17th. The girls started very slowly and after the first quarter were behind 16 v 5. The 2nd quarter was a much closer affair and the girls started to produce some good moves, with some excellent shooting from Aoife Kiernan(6) and Rebecca Dwyer (4) leaving the score 24 v 19 after quarter no 2.
The girls played their best basketball of the season in quarter no 3 with Aoife Kiernan on a hot streak hitting a brilliant 3 pointer and 11 in the quarter. Other excellent scores by Roisin Candon (4), Ruth Killoran (2) and Dwyer (2) to leave the score 32 v 37.
The final quarter was edge of your seat stuff, with both teams trying to play on the fast break. Every ball was fought for and the Grammer came storming back into the game to level the score on 43 points each with time nearly up. However, Boyle moved the ball down court quicklly and with only 1.2 seconds left on the clock Grace Carty was fouled when shooting, giving her two free throws. She nailed the first one to give us a 1 point lead, and after missing the second there wasn't enough time for the Grammer and the hooter blew to much relief. What a win, finishing on a score line of Sligo Grammer 43 v Abbey College 44
U-17 Boys Soccer:
Well done to our U17 Boys Soccer team who overcame a tough test against Ballinode College at Sligo ATU today. With the game in the balance at 4.4 in the 2nd half, Brìon O'Dowd stepped up to score two crackers to help Abbey win 7.4. Edwin George also netted a fine goal with Alex Oates scoring 4 including a well taken 1st half penalty.
Junior D Ladies:
On Friday the 14th of October our Junior D Girls team took on Roscommon Community College in a game which was a home fixture for the RCC girls. The weather conditions were unfavourable for both teams with rain at times.
This game didn’t have the best of a start for the ACC girls as RCC were the first to put scores on the board. At the second and fourth minute, RCC converted points to have a two-point lead after five minutes into the game.
ACC’s forwards made a comeback to level score. These points were well-taken by Aoife O’Donnell in the sixth minute and Georgina Wynne in the seventh minute.
Ten minutes in ACC substituted Adrianna Barzanska for Julianne More in the right-half back position.
However, RCC responded well to these scores and got four well-worked points in the space of ten minutes, to give them a four-point lead after twenty minutes.
Due to injury, twenty minutes in, Ugne Padamanskaite was substituted for Rachel Carroll. Rachel then swapped with Julianne to leave her in the half-back line and Julianne in midfield.
ACC’s centre half-forward, Rachel Flynn, secured the last score of the half with a lovely point from the right-hand-side of the posts on the twenty-metre line in the twenty third minute.
This left the half time score,
ACC 0:3 RCC 0:6
The ACC girls started the second half strong after their full-back Anna Carty made a powerful run up the centre to get a convincing point.
In the sixth minute of the second half, Amy O’Donohue collected a ball on the left side of the goals which was carefully crossed and got the first goal of the game. This gave the ACC girls a great boost to keep pushing on from here. Four minutes later, Rachel Flynn scored ACC’s second goal.
In the forty-second minute of the game, RCC once again closed the margin with a well-worked goal and a minute later with a point, both from their full-forward.
ACC made a substitution in the forty-third minute by replacing Aoife O’Donnell with Alanna Cooney to go into corner-forward. Georgina Wynne scored two goals and a point, all in the space of four minutes to put ACC into the lead. After Georgina’s super contribution to the scoreboard, ACC made some more changes by substituting Rebecca McDermott for Dearbhla Brennan in the back line, and Georgina Wynne for Ellen McDonagh in the full-forward line. Annie O’Connor got ACC’s last point of the game.
It was a great match between ACC and RCC. Both teams tried their best. This was a great win for the ACC girls, and the second for the Junior girls' teams in ACC with the Junior C team having secured a victory earlier in the week. This match finished on a score line of,
ACC 8:6 RCC 1:11
Junior C Ladies GAA:
Kick off was at 12 o’clock in St Nathy’s, Ballaghadereen. St. Nathy’s won the throw up and great play by Nathy’s midfield led to a goal but shortly after Roisin Candon opened up ACC’s scoring with a fine point after Ada Conheady won the ball back.
Nathy’s kickout went into their forwards but was won after great duel from Shauna McGrath. Shauna McGrath passed to Claire O’Gara who was tackled and won a free. Emma Duggan took the free and scored a great first goal for ACC making the score equal.
Aoife Kiernan won a Nathy’s kickout but was tackled and won a free, which Anna McGrath popped over the bar. Straight after that, Aoife Kiernan was on the ball again and scored a great point which soared over the bar.
Two powerful shots from ACC hit the crossbar twice in the same play. The ball was played up to the forward line by a Nathy’s defender, and a shot was taken which rolled under goalkeeper Emma Kelly’s legs.
Shauna McGrath worked hard and won the ball back but received an awful tackle, winning ACC a penalty. Emma Duggan took the penalty and it flew over the bar for a point.
ACC caught the ball from the goal kick and scored with a wonderful little tap-in off Emma Duggan’s leg. Nathy’s kickout was another long one reaching the half-forward line which glided past the ACC backline and sent the ball to the back of the net.
With a great defensive display shown by Ruth Killoran, the ball was played back up the field and into the hands of Emma Duggan who scored another fantastic goal.
Ruth Killoran was on the ball again and won the ball back from a Nathy’s player. Killoran passed it to Shauna McGrath who passed it to Emma Duggan who banged it into the net. Shortly after the kickout, ACC won a penalty which Emma Duggan converted into a goal.
Claire O’ Gara made a great block on a shot which would have been a Nathy’s goal and passed the ball to Anna McGrath, who scored a point from a long way back. Nathy’s took another shot looking for a goal, but luckily Ciara Byrne got a hand to it which steered it wide.
Nathy’s won a penalty shortly after, which they took but nothing came of it because of an amazing save from ACC goalkeeper Emma Kelly. A short kickout from Emma Kelly was caught by Shauna McGrath and played to Roisin Candon who passed to Grace Carty who sent the ball into the back of the net. The score at the break was 6-6 to ACC and 2-5 to Nathy’s.
Nathy’s won the throw in once again and tried to take a shot which was stopped by Emma Kelly. Shauna McGrath caught the kickout and played the ball up the field but her shot went just wide. A great kickout from ACC keeper Emma Kelly was caught by Shauna McGrath and passed to Aoife Kiernan. Great handpasses between Anna McGrath and Aoife Kiernan lead to a brilliant point from Shauna McGrath.
Another kickout from the Nathy’s keeper sent the ball back to the half forwards. Ciara Byrne made an incredible goal line clearance, but it landed straight into the hands of a Nathy’s player. Nathy’s tried to go for goal, but the ball had no power behind it and was kicked away by Emma Kelly.
ACC kickout was caught by Sophie King who passed the ball to the half forwards. Shauna McGrath won a free and sent the ball over the bar. Anna McGrath caught the goal kick from Nathy’s and took a shot, however it went just wide. The ball was sent down the field and Nathy’s scored a goal. The ball was sent back up the field after the goal kick and Emma Duggan made a great sprint to keep the ball in play and passed it to Grace Carty, who scored a great point.
Another long kickout sent the ball back into the ACC half and Sophie King made a great tackle stopping Nathy’s from scoring a goal. Ada Conheady and Ruth Killoran worked together and brought the ball up the field which led to a point being scored. Shauna McGrath won the ball back from Nathy’s and passed to Aoife Kiernan who scored a point. The final score was 7-11 to ACC and 4-7 to Nathy’s.

5/10/22 ACC V BALLYHAUNIS COMUNITY COLLEGE:
At 11am the ACC Junior C TY and 3rd year girls played Ballyhaunis, on the school pitch there for home advantage, rain was pouring while our girls warmed up. Once the Referee arrived the rain decided to hold off for the first half, it was a cold and breezy first half with a score line at half time of ACC: 0-7 to Ballyhaunis: 4-5. A close enough score line in the first half. Then about 10 minutes into the second half the rain started pouring again, completely different conditions from the first half. Every sub got playing during the game and everyone played well. Nearing the end of the second half ACC was awarded and penalty and was scored, great one taken by Emma Duggan. Unfortunately, the score line doesn’t reflect on how well everyone played and the final score when the whistle blew was ACC: 3-9 (18) to Ballyhaunis: 5-9 (24).
Thanks to Emma Kelly for this comprehensive match report.
