Our boys Senior Soccer team overcame a strong St Clares Manorhamilton 4-2 at Ballisodare on Tuesday. 2 goals each from the Davids, Flanagan and Duggan were enough to earn the win. This was a great team performance from everyone with David Duggan giving a Man of the Match performance in midfield.
The boys now advance to the Connacht Semi final.
First Year Boys GAA:
The first years boys of Abbey Community College took on Roscommon CBS in the final of the league competition this Wednesday. The setting for the game was the fabulous indoor 'Dome' pitch in Bekan, Mayo.
Despite getting off to a slow start the players clawed their way back into the game and found themselves only 1 point down at half time on a scoreline of 1-6 to 2-4.
We began the second half in lightening style with an unanswered 1-1 putting us 3 points to the good. The CBS came back and were soon on pole position once again. This was a lead that they never relinquished despite no lack of effort or skill on our part. The final scoreline read CBS 6.10 Abbey Community College 4.10.
This was a very competent performance by our players who have had a good campaign to date. A word of thanks to all 31 players who have committed themselves to the cause over the last few months. A mention must also go to the parents and family members that turned up on the day to provide support which was greatly appreciated.
Attention now turns to the championship in March.
Boys Rugby:
ACC boys rugby team had a fantastic win over Colaiste Chiarain 65 0 in Athlone on Wednesday 12th January. Well done to players & coaches.
Junior B Girls GAA:
It was a cold icy Monday morning, the pitch was frosted over and had just been freshly lined by our caretaker Shane Caslin. Abbey Community College were playing Manorhamilton. They had arrived at 11 o clock, ready for the game at 11:30. Both teams started warming up to get used to the conditions. We were lined out from 1 to 15 all of us were shaking from the cold and a bit of nerves. The game started off good for manor with a goal straight away, that knocked Abbey, but we came back with 1 point to settle the nerves. The first water break felt like it would never come, after a talk from Ms. O Roarke and Ms. M.Corcoran we were ready to go out again. This time there was a fire in our bellies, and we started off the next quarter with a point. Manor came back again with another goal to knock us down. The whistle for half time blew and we were down by a good bit but that was the only thing that dropped our heads were held high and we were still confident in our ability. Manorhamilton were strong and eager to go with an action packed first half there was hope for the second half.
We ran out on to the pitch with manorhamilton running out beside us. The sun had come out and the frost was disappearing. Everyone was out on the pitch to add to their nerves. Time had passed, scores were racking up for both sides. The whistle blew for the water break, Abbey was 4 points. Manor were confident but so where we went ran back out straight away a ball dropped in and out corner forward kicked it in one in it. As time passed points did also, but for manorhamilton. We were all eager to get the ball into the opposition's goals. When the final whistle blew our heads dropped knowing we had lost as manorhamilton celebrated their win.

Junior C Girls GAA:
The girls first outing was against Ballymote in Ballymotes home pitch. This was the girls' first time playing as part of the school team. The girls were on top for most of the match but were narrowly beaten in the end. This team is made up of 2nd years and a few 5th years. They were coached by their two wonderful teachers, Ms. O’Roarke and Ms. M.Corcoran.
For their second game they played Scoil Mhuire Strokestown away. The Strokestown side was very strong and unfortunately did not go the girls' way despite their great determination that showed throughout their whole match.
For the third game the girls yet again put up a great match against Balinamore Community school this time in time Abbey Park Boyle. The girls were on top for most of the game until a few quick scores left them behind. They kept going right until the final whistle but yet again were narrowly beaten.
The girls really enjoyed the matches and the training sessions which took place after school on Tuesdays. A special thank you to coaches who travelled with us and supported us at all our matches.
By Claire O’Gara, Ruth Killoran and Shauna McGrath.
Connacht Senior Boy’s Championship:
Our senior boys Gaelic football team got their championship under way last Wednesday and we made the short trip to Charlestown to play Joseph's Community College.
The game was very evenly matched in the initial stages with both teams having to come to terms with the heavy under foot conditions, but it was ACC who started to show their dominance as the first half progressed and played some excellent football to lead by 0-03 to 2-05 at half time.
St. Joseph’s came out strong after half time to dominate the 3rd quarter, but our defence held firm and with some excellent breakaway scores ACC remained in the lead at the second half water break. After the water break, we produced some lovely football to extend our lead with some excellent scores to finish the match on a score line of St. Joseph’s 1-05 ACC 3-15.
Both teams should be commended for the spirit in which the game was played and producing an enjoyable and entertaining match for all the spectators.

School bank:
By Oisín Mac Dermott.
Myself and my friends are currently running the school bank. Chloe Earley, Brianna Lennon, Oran Henry, Darragh Casserly, Grace Harding, Daire Scott and I are working together with Conor McDonagh from Bank of Ireland to set up student accounts for students in the school. For the past week we have been setting up the bank such as creating posters and placing them around the school. Going around the classes and informing the students what exactly they will gain from setting up an account and what they need to do. The perks involve contactless payment, easy to create, independence and no interest. After we had made it known to students what the bank entails, we told the teachers when the bank would be open.
On Tuesday we opened the bank for an hour and opened accounts for the first years and second years. To open their accounts, we needed photo ID, so we made sure whoever was opening an account had their identification with them. We would then scan a QR code and enter their name, date of birth, school, school email address and phone number. After that their account was set up. We then handed out souvenirs.
It's really fun and interesting. It's also a great experience learning how to manage the school bank. We are all enjoying it and very thankful we were given this opportunity.

Anti-Bullying & Stand Up Awareness Week:
Its been an eventful week at ACC;
Anti Bullying and Stand Up Awareness Week.
First Years have all received their Five lessons from the Cool Schools Programme
Lesson 1 What is Bullying?
Lesson 2. Types of Bullying
Lesson 3. Bystanders
Lesson 4. What to do if I'm being bullied
Lesson 5. Anti Bullying Class Code
Second and Third Years received the cool schools lessons last year so this year the Fuse Toolkit is available for SPHE teachers and they are rolling out those lessons over the next few weeks. They will also be covering topics around cyberbullying and noticing it, Consent and the law. In particular teachers will be highlighting Coco's Law - Nonconsensual sharing of explicit images. There are opportunities that may arise with your son/daughter so it would be a good time to discuss bullying and its implications for others. It is also important to highlight to your son/daughter how important it is to tell the 'one good adult', in their lives- be they a Parent, Teacher, Tutor, Trainer, Yearhead, Guidance Counsellor or Chaplain, Deputy Principal or Principal.
As part of Anti-Bullying week we celebrate Stand Up Awareness Week 2021. We are aware and conscious that LGBT+ young people are more likely to be bullied. Stand Up Week' highlights the fact that we as a school community stand against homophobic bullying, biphobic & transphobic bullying .
We stand up for creating a safe space for LGBTI+ young people.
86% of LGBTI+ students have felt deliberately excluded or "left out" by other students. It was important to our student council to decorate the front door #comein.
Senior cycle students have been engaged in projects to promote wellbeing this week. Fifth years have presented to second years on Peer pressure and these presentations will be ongoing.
Our story share programme is ongoing over these weeks which is an empathy building programme. This is being rolled out to First ,Second and Transition Year students. If you wish to check out more information about story exchange check out www.narrative4.ie.

Students of Improv learn:
to create, and to trust their own creativity.
to truly listen, both verbally and to the underlying emotion.
how to communicate back.
to work with others.
what makes things funny.
how to heighten the funny.
how Improv can be applied to everyday life, social situations.
turn group tensions into creative opportunities.
The students had fantastic fun during the workshop and really enjoyed it.

Science Week 2021:
Science week proved to be an action-packed one here at Abbey Community College. Teachers carried out experiments and demonstrated all things scientific together with their students.
A special mention to Mr. Coman who took students to the marquee in celebratik of science week.
It was an opportunity to demonstrate some chemistry and physics phenomenon.
They investigated colours produced when different metals are ignited. They demonstrated some chemical reactions namely the blue bottle reaction and the oxidation of iron wool. Using water a heat absorber, some hand were safely lite on fire. They found the biproducts of combustion using an ethanol whoosh. Dry ice was used to demonstrate the acidic nature of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide gas was captured in bubbles. The rapidly production of carbon dioxide gas when dry ice is heated produced some serious explosions... All in the name of science of course!
German Exchange:
Abbey Community College welcomed students from the Werner-Heisenberg school in Germany this month. The group of 24 students and 3 teachers arrived from Riesa, Germany into Ireland on Sunday, November 1st and attended school for the week in Abbey College. The students took part in this exchange in order to improve their English skills. They attended various classes in the school throughout the week. They had a particular interest in Irish class and were fascinated by the Irish school system and how different it was to their own. The German students, along with our 5th Year German class also went on several trips and took part in activities while in Boyle. They paid visits to Lough Key Forest Park, King House, Boyle Abbey and organised a walking tour of Boyle. The students also engaged in a cooking challenge with our students and attended an exciting science demonstration which they really enjoyed. It was a great week for all involved in the exchange, including the German students, as well as all staff and students in Abbey Community College and we can’t wait to visit them in the future.
Open Day & Parent/Teacher Meetings:
In the interest of the health and safety of all students and staff, ACC has decided to cancel our open day and all scheduled parent/teacher meetings for now. We will reconsider the situation in the new year when hopefully the covid numbers will be in a better place.
With respect to P/T meetings, parents may make contact with the school separately to arrange a meeting with management, year heads and/or individual subject teachers to discuss their child's progress. These meetings will mostly be over the phone or may also be arranged over TEAMS or via ZOOM. Only in exceptional and urgent circumstances can meetings be arranged in person.
Mr Colohan and Mr. Harding will be visiting the local national schools over the next couple of weeks, with the permission of and, by arrangement with, the individual school. They will distribute school application forms at this point to those who require them.
In the meantime please look at our promotional video and feel free to send it to neighbours, friends and any parent who is hoping to apply to our school for the 2022 enrolment phase

Abbey Community College Boyle vs Carrick Community School- senior girls GAA:
On a dull and wet day in Boyle, Abbey Community College senior girls take on Carrick Community School senior girls, in the Gaelic competition for schools. The referee blows the whistle to start the game and Boyle win the throw in, the ball is carried up the pitch but slotted just wide of the post. Soon after, Aisling Feely of Boyle scores the first point of the game from a well taken free. Carrick respond straight away with an equaliser but Sarah Conheady’s resilience is shown as she runs nearly the whole pitch and sets Feely up for her second point of the game.
Carrick stay persistent and get a brilliantly struck goal from their full forward. Carrick score their second point with a shot from the 20 metre line. Carrick’s Aislinn Smith scores another great point and scores another directly after. Then Carrick’s Michaela Dunne proves to be their key player after setting up majority of Carrick’s scores and adds a goal of her own to the tally. Boyle’s Sarah Kiernan gets her first point of the game and straight after adds her second from a well taken free. Then, the whistle is blown for the first water break.
Straight after the water break, Boyle’s Grace Harding wins the ball and then wins a free kick which leads to Caoimhe Cregg slotting the ball over the bar. Soon after, Kiernan scores an excellent goal to bring Boyle back into the game.
Feely then scores another well taken point. Boyle’s patience in passing get them an excellent worked goal through Cregg. Kiernan then gets a yellow card for a foul on the Carrick keeper. The half time whistle is blown the being Boyle: 2 – 6 Carrick: 2 – 4.
Feely kicks off the second half with another point for Boyle. Kiernan comes back on after her sin-bin. Carrick use their hand passing brilliantly and Dunne scores another goal. Soon after, Conheady scores a great point but Carrick respond straight away with a goal and a point. Feely adds to her tally with another point. Carrick’s Chloe McGuinness scores another goal and a point. Kiernan then scores another well taken free kick. The whistle is blown for the second water break.
Cregg scores a great goal after boyle winning the Carrick kick-out. Cora Ryan, the Boyle captain, scores a well worked goal. Boyle are really taking hold to the game now, as Sophie King scores a nice point and Carrick are showing real signs of tiredness. Aisling Feely scores the point of the game from way out after a lot of hard work from Conheady.
As the clock runs down Feely scores another great point to put Boyle well ahead. Leah Downes adds to the tally of goals with a low and hard shot into the bottom corner. Carrick are still unrelenting with their attacking but Boyle stay tight at the back with an exceptional block from Tara Sheridan. Cora Ryan scores a lovely goal and the final whistle is blown. Boyle get a well deserved win on a score line of 7 – 11 to 5 – 7.
With thanks to trainers Ms. Noone and Ms. Keane for all their work.

School of Jock:
On Tuesday and Wednesday last, the T.Y. students of Abbey College entered the wonderful world of broadcasting via the School of Jock workshop, presented by RTÉ radio presenter and broadcasting mentor, Eric Moore. Over the two day period, the students experienced what it's like to create and present original content in a studio environment.
The workshop began with a passionate introduction from radio veteran Eric Moore, about his love affair with radio and how he set up his own school's radio station back in 1988, at age 16. After the pep-talk it was down to business with a guide to
presentation and how to find your on-air
voice, along with some good advice on the
mechanics of the studio environment.
For the past two years, Abbey College has
housed the A.C.C.R. (Abbey Community
College Radio) studio. This term, the
T.Y. students will focus on podcasting, with a view to interviewing guest speakers who visit the college. As part of the School of Jock workshop, the students covered the essentials on interviewing techniques,
including knowing your audience, interviewing with a purpose, research and general preparation, planning a questionnaire, and even how to behave around guests.
For the second part of the workshop, the students were split into pairs and asked to
prepare a short questionnaire on their partner. Each student would have the opportunity
to interview their partner, putting into
practice what they had learned earlier in class.
With everyone settled and nerves at bay, one by one the interviews got under way,
beginning with the interviewer introducing themselves, explaining where they're from,
who their guest is, and what the guest is there to discuss. After around 90 seconds of loose chat, the interviewer wrapped up by thanking the guest and signing off with both a station and personal name check, followed by an
A.C.C.R. jingle. After that, the students switched roles with the interviewer becoming the interviewee and vice versa.
All interviews were recorded, so the students can listen back and make improvements
where necessary.
The students really enjoyed the workshop and look forward to putting it into practice for TY Merry Month when they plan to become lunch time DJ's for the month of December.
1st year Musicians:
Our first year music students have worked tirelessly over the last few weeks on their debut performances at Abbey Community College.
We were blown away by the talents of each and every student. The manner in which they appreciated and enjoyed each other's performances was heartwarming. We look forward to how these students will grow musically during their time here. Well done to all involved!
'Lámh'
As part of their Life Skills program, our transition year students have been learning the skill of learning the sign language 'Lámh'. With thanks to teacher Ms. Keane for imparting this fabulous skill to the students. They would like to wish the community a very Happy Halloween!

TY History
Our transition year visited Boyle Abbey on Monday 20 September for part of their research module on local history. The students were given a guided tour on the history of the construction of the Cistercian monastery & the role the monks played in the area dating back to the 12th Century A.D. Following the guided tour, our students took time to explore the site.
TY Law workshop
On the 23rd of September, the TY students of Abbey Community College participated in an insightful and informative law workshop which lasted the entire school day. Barrister James Fahy came to the school and taught the students about how the law system in Ireland works, the main professions in law and organized a court room reenactment. A number of TY students played a part in the mock trial. As well as having lots of fun, the TY’s also benefited from learning all about civil and criminal law and the day also made some students consider having a future career in law.
TY cycle safety programme
The third and final week the programme involved the students cycling around the town of Boyle and practicing the cycle safety and skills training they learned in the previous lessons.
Overall the aim of this course was to promote competent and confident cyclists. We plan to develop these skills throughout the year during trips along the canal to Lough key. All of these skills are being developed in preparation for our ultimate 100k cycle to Roosky later in the year.

TY trip to Petersburg Outdoor Adventure Centre
The TY students headed off bright and early from the school grounds to Petersburg Outdoor Adventure Centre in Clonbur, Co. Galway. This is one of the highlights of the year and a brilliant bonding session where students got to participate in activities such as kayaking, canoeing, raft building, obstscle course, orienteering and team challenges. The students were split into 4 groups completing two water and one land based activity. One of the students remarked that "getting to knock their teacher, Mr O Connor, Miss Kenny and Mr. Greaney, into the water made their day. One feels that the teachers got even more enjoyment from getting their revenge. Overall an unbelievable day was had with students developing new friendships and interests which should stand to them for the year ahead.

We spent the rest of our time experiencing all the park has to offer from rollercoasters to the Zoo, the 5D cinema to spending all our money on trying to win a giant teddy. Overall it was a fantastic day out and thanks so much to Miss O'Rourke, Mr. Burke and Miss Maher for coming with us on the day.

The students heard the fascinating history of the Abbey and the many functions it has served under various patrons over the years. Thanks to our wonderful guide Thomas Campbell who answered our questions and gave a great talk to the students. After that, it was time to explore the grounds and remains of the Abbey. We saw the evidence of stone masonry, the arches and the remains of the monastic life. Our students say they would recommend booking a visit to others and the site is currently offering free admission as an OPW run attraction. Thanks to the first year history teachers and SNAs who accompanied the students on their walking tour.
1st Year Games at lunchtime:
Ms. Keane is currently running a board games club for 1st years in the library every Tuesday at Lunch. This is a space where students can make friends, socialise with their peers, develop their confidence and have fun at the same time. It can also teach students the value of teamwork and improve problem solving skills. The 1st year students are really enjoying their time with the games.
