The AARP Tax-Aide Foundation State Tax Assistance Program allows NC counselors to coordinate with counselors in other states to prepare returns for the taxpayers other state(s). Not all states participate in this program - see list below for those states that do and do not participate.
You should use our scheduling line to make your appointment and let the volunteer know you are a part year resident or have income from another state, other than NC.
Special permission from the tax-payer is required and may require additional paperwork. The process will take longer than normal preparation. Counselors from the other site will be given temporary access to your return through the software, so your documents will never be sent or shared through an unsecured process. All participating states provide the same standard of service.
You will go through the entire NC preparation process in your first visit and then leave your documents with the Local Coordinator. The Local Coordinator will scan you documents into your return and have the District Coordinator coordiate with the other states counselor to have them complete your other state return. Once this process is complete, you will be called to come in and review and sign the entire return.
PLEASE NOTE: If the state does not participate in the program and has a state income tax, we can not do your entire return. This is new for 2023.
Remember, failure to file a state return may result in interest and penalty charges.
States which do not have a state income tax generally do not participate unless it is for special credits. Some states require additional intake/interview questionnaires be completed. You can obtain a copy to complete at home by clicking on the view link next to the state name.
