Types of research RCTs are best suited for:
RCTs work well for specific and limited independent variables. RCTs can be used both in laboratory settings (laboratory experiments), and in the field (field experiments) (Bhattacherjee, 2012)
Laboratory experiments are more common, although field experiments are the best kind, since their internal and external validity are both high; however, they are rare since they are complex.
RTCs are the best type of design for explanatory research as they determine a cause-and-effect relationship.
RTCs are historically used in medicine, but increasingly more in social sciences such as in psychology, economics, education, political science, and sociology (Deaton & Cartright, 2018).
