Ethics is a serious consideration in all research methodologies. However, because the narrative approach is so focused on the individual or group of individuals as the unit of measure it is notably more significant to take into consideration. This method is often used for vulnerable or marginalized populations, as such strong attention to ethical considerations is encouraged.
With all forms of narrative data approaches and especially life stories, oral histories, personal accounts and narratives, the following issues should be explored (Crawford, 2012):
Authenticity of the story: Participants may want to add or make up elements that reorient the story from it's original form.
Distortion of the data: Especially true when events are being recounted that are many years old.
Unable to recall the story: Especially true for participants that are retelling a traumatic event that they have blocked out.
Inability to tell the real story: True in the case of an event was so horrific, that telling the story is " re-traumatizing" .
Fear of reprisal: Participants may fear repercussions if they tell the truth, might not reveal the entirely of the story.
Telling the story in their own voice: This can be caused bye the effect of the researcher and their approach to analysis, use of language, vocabulary, context are subjective and at times, interpretation can change the voice of the participants true meaning.
