HOW TO ANALYZE NARRATIVE RESEARCH DATA
Analyzing qualitative data such as narrative research does not rely on a single method. Instead, the data is collected and common themes and concepts are observed (Overcash, 2004).
According to Overcash (2004) three points of reference can be utilized to analyze narrative data:
1. Recurrence
a. Ideas that have the same meaning but different wording
2. Repetition
a. Same ideas that use the same wording
3. Forcefulness
a. Verbal or non-verbal cues that reinforce a concept
As participants within narrative studies are individual within their experiences, so would their responses be unique despite common similarities. It is then important for a systemic review of narrative data to isolate concepts that are in some way important but may be articulated differently (Overcash, 2004).
