This portrait is of my mother, Cindy. This photograph was taken during some of the worst days for deaths in the UK, just before her and my father went food shopping for the third time since lockdown began. I have been very passionate about photographing and documenting the past few months our lives as we all, in our own ways, attempt to navigate through a genuinely unique time. I have a particular connection to this image, more so than any I have taken during the pandemic. Whilst taking this image just before my parents left to go shopping, my mother was very anxious and worried. At this point in time, the death toll was consistently rising at an alarming rate as were the number of new confirmed cases. As many times as the rest of us offered to go instead, she insisted that only her and Dad would be the two to leave the house. Despite only being able to see her eyes, you can sense the anxiousness and worry on her mind, wanting to leave and return as soon as possible. You can also see my Dad searching for his mask in the background behind her just before they left. Only a few months on from this photograph and I feel like we are living in a completely different time. Life has slowly begun to return back to normal where possible and we have all become somewhat accustomed to living in this challenging period. However, looking back on this particular photograph, that was taken just weeks into lockdown in a country rife of uncertainty, it helps me to remember just how scared we all were about what was going on and what might happen.
