Title - ‘Plock Court Meadow’
The first painting here is an acrylic painting which i did Plein air at Plock Court Wildflower Meadow, Gloucester while socially distancing. This is the first acrylic painting I have ever done outdoors. I was pleased with the outcome, the wildflowers really inspired me.

I painted this in lockdown in my garden studio. I am on an art shape emergents course of study and this is a close up of a daisy on a vibrant background painted in acrylic on card. I have really enjoyed being creating during the crisis.

Tina Pentney - 23/07/20 A painting based on photos taken on Painswick Beacon in early Lockdown. The sun shone and shadows were long. The sky was so blue I remembered the first verse of a favourite poem which I have incorporated down the left side. It was so perfect with my dog as companion, yet I felt so small with the threat of the virus hanging over the perfection of nature, an unseen threat making it so important to fully enjoy each day and the wild flowers as they emerged into Spring.

This is an image of a linoprint I made during lockdown. I completed it in April whilst on furlough from my job. Being on furlough was stressful in many ways, not knowing how things would go, but it also gave me time to pursue creative activities such as drawing and printing. The person in the image may be me dealing with a big mixture of feelings.

Title - ‘Prove It’
“Prove It” was one of multiple artworks inspired by the resurgence of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. The quote on the piece was in response to certain people’s reactions to the systemic oppression of black people globally, “we all bleed the same”, “I don’t care what colour you are, black, white, blue-“. I painted it out of frustration and grief that the very people perpetuating racism were the ones denying it’s existence. (Acrylic, sharpie)

In this piece, also inspired by BLM, I used mixed media to change the meaning of Christina Rossetti’s ‘Goblin Men’. The poem serves as a warning to leave Goblin Men alone, to beware them. I reframed it to imply that these men are in trouble and the poem was propaganda so that no one would help, similar to the biased news coverage of BLM protests. (Acrylic, biro, sticker)

Title - ‘Only Joking’
This piece was inspired by the normalisation of jokes at women’s expense. This culture of “locker room talk” attributes to and perpetuates rape culture and sees any women who takes offence as being a “feminazi”. The distorted features of the figure pictured highlights the damage done to women. (pastel)

Title - ‘Blood Moon’
This piece was inspired by the blood moon/any variation of the moon looking different that I always try and wake up for and always fail to actually see. I imagined that those that saw the moon had been forever changed and carried with them a part of the blood moon, hence the double sided painting. (acrylic, biro)* *Please note, this painting is double sided so I’ve submitted it as two separate photos one by one.

Art making has been my lifebelt, again. Material which came my way to set the creative process going, included teachers from two of the groups I attend who emailed some tasks, then Grayson Perry’s, utterly brilliant, Art Club and since then being able to sign up for online courses (provided by local disability arts charity Artshape). My doctor, early on, said I should visit a computer when necessary for my sanity.
Art making has been my lifebelt, again. I went back a week later and painted a recycled wheel Hub. It was so lovely to be out of doors and I find painting has been a lifeline to me during the crisis.

Title - ‘Self Portrait in Lockdown’
I painted this picture of myself in Lockdown and after sharing it with others I got told I looked ‘sad’ and ‘wistful’. It got me thinking this is how I feel quite a lot at the moment, sad that we can’t see friends or relatives, and wistful as I can’t imagine how things will get back to how they were.

I enjoy painting, however at the beginning of lockdown I gave up on trying to write a log, deserted my paint palette, deciding to make a pictorial record of what was happening around me in April.
I did six pieces in pen, ink and felt tip, each roughly A4 in size. They were done very quickly, but I thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of the mixed media. They aren’t masterpieces and were only intended to record my life at the time. They are well out of date as Sir Tom More hadn’t been knighted then, but I had fun doing them.

I painted this in response to my mental health struggles in lockdown, the colours are bright and exciting, but the expression of the girl is one of sadness and fear, likewise she is crying but in glitter. These contrasts show clearly how confusing it can be to be sad and have no real reason for it. (Acrylic, biro, nail polish)

This painting was inspired by the apparent “end of lockdown”, the girl pictured is an angel dressed in vibrant colours, representing the excitement felt by the country at the “end of the virus”. But like the previous painting, the expression of fear is unmistakable, and this represents the anxiety of adjusting to normal life and the fear of a second wave. (Acrylic)

I painted this as I was going through a particularly bad patch of dissociation, a mental disorder that sees the brain “switch off” when presented with anxiety, basically a severe form of zoning out. The person in the picture is colourful and in focus but the surroundings are fragmented and discordant. They appear as if through a fog, which is what it feels like to live with dissociation. (Acrylic)

Declaring myself an artist has been part of recovery from school. It is working, very slowly, and has thus far included a diagnosis of autism, and ongoing treatment for mental illnesses. Normal life is exhausting and confusing, while lockdown has largely concerned coping with shopping twice a week in the kind of Dr Who episode I’d prefer to stay behind the sofa for (and loss of much of the support I rely on).
