Title - ‘No Cars, No Planes, Robin & Song Thrush’
I make wildlife sound recordings. Rural Gloucestershire might be regarded as a quiet place to do this, but here, as in most other places, anthropophony – human generated sound – has come to dominate the soundscape.
We live under the fly path for transatlantic routes, whenever you look up, there will be multiple jets in the sky. In 2010, the ash plume from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption caused the closure of European airspace, providing an opportunity to make recordings under quiet skies.
It became obvious during the early days of the ‘lockdown’ that the airspace was again quiet; not only this, road traffic also was enormously reduced, allowing sound recording in conditions that haven’t existed for a lifetime. I made many recordings and this one, of a Robin and Song Thrush in the Slad Valley, is a small example - an example of what things could be like all the time...
