Creating structure will help students feel secure during disrupted times. Every family is different, but here are some elements to consider as you build your new normal, along with a sample schedule that has been circulating online.
Family meals: Plan one meal together each day, with everyone taking turns being head chef. Students can use their leadership and communication skills to tell others what to do after choosing what will be prepared. Have a family conversation around that meal with all electronics off!
Math: spend at least 15 minutes on grade-level practice
Reading: independently or as a family
Writing: check out our grade-level pages for prompts, or keep a family journal
Physical: Outdoor walks, runs, sports, games. Create your own sport and share it on FB!
Arts and Crafts: Create using recycling as art supplies. Visit a museum website and learn about art.
Music: Practice, sing along to streaming music, create a musical instrument! Listen to music such as opera or a symphony if you have never heard one before.
Please click here to access the VHE Tech Help site. This page provides parents direct access to help with the platforms your student is working on, including parent videos for SeeSaw and Google Classroom. If you encounter an issue with your technology, you can email akgebbie@vestal.k12.ny.us or mrmiller@vestal.k12.ny.us or call IT at 607-766-3800.
If you have a Vestal-issued Chromebook, Google Classroom is one of the apps on the taskbar of your desktop. From your browser window, look for the grid of 9 dots in the upper right corner of the screen, click on it and select Google Classroom from the list of apps. Learn more about chromebooks here. If you are using a tablet, sign in to the Google Classroom app using your school login.
If you are using your personal computer, follow these steps. Scroll down for a PDF version, if you would like to print out a handy hard copy, and please email with questions: akgebbie@vestal.k12.ny.us
1) Go to this link: https://scric.okta.com/ Login with the username and password given to you by your teacher.
2) You may be prompted to choose an account security image. This usually happens the very first time a student logs into his/her account. If you are, the page will look like this.
3) Next you will be taken into your MyApps drive, which will look like this
4) If your teacher has set up a Google Classroom, you will click on the green Google Classroom icon, which will bring you to the Google Classroom page.
5) Next, click on the plus sign in the top right corner.
6) Select Join Class and enter the code from your teacher. Now you should be in. First you can check the stream, which is like the message board, where your teacher will post messages for you, links to assignments, or other important information.
Helpful Parent Guides to Classroom
This document and video give useful information, but do not follow the login procedure they describe--use the one I have given above. However, I thought the walkthrough once you are in Classroom would be helpful.
A final tip: If your child is logging onto a shared device and the other users use Google, remember to sign off in between sessions. Or have your the different users login using different browsers to keep the accounts separate. 1 child could use Chrome, 1 could use Firefox, etc…
