2010-2014

With the start of a new decade, came new challenges and opportunities for Buena. Students throughout 2010-2014 were captivated by creative clothing and hairstyles. Here are some examples of things that were relevant at the time.

Growing Environmental Awareness

Students encounter changes at Buena such as in 2011 when the Environmental Club introduced a recycling program within Buena. This program began with a Buena Student, Hannah King, which placed black boxes around the campus of Buena to help students recycle with the support of 50 teachers, who had agreed to leave the black bins in their classrooms. Additionally, the Environmental Club began growing a tomato garden that sold tomatoes to the school cafeteria. This reduced the environmental impact by preventing pollution from transport (Worley 1). These changes reflected the growing environmental awareness of the time.

2012 Election

The conclusion of Obama’s first term as President brought politics back to Buena. Although students weren’t allowed to vote, they were able to experience the debates between Obama and Romney. An article from Buena Speaks, October 19, 2012, described the main arguments from both parties. The article provided the stance each party had on environmental issues. For example, Obama supported allowing businesses a limied amount of pollution they can emit. On the other hand, Romney believed that this would cost the business profits. This allowed students to form their own opinion upon the election (Fenstermacher-Price 1).

Anti-Drug Attitudes

Another focus was on the substance abuse of marijuana. Buena Speaks released an article about the problems of marijuana. The main purpose of the article was to inform the students at Buena of the risks that come with substance abuse and the consequences that follow with the abuse of marijuana (Smith 3). The article uses facts to illustrate and warn students about the damage that marijuana can inflict upon an adolescent. Similarly, Buena Speaks writes about the effects of alcohol, advocating for students not to fall for fear pressure, as it considers that 66% of students fall victim to peer pressure (Samayoa 7). The article educates students on the amount of death related to alcohol consumption and warns them to consider the consequence before drinking.

Technology

Just as marijuana problems were rising, the rise of technology in the classroom brought its own problems. Many students started to own smartphones, and these frequently distracted students during class (Covault 1). However, since the introduction of smartphones in a school setting, schools have become more keen on jumping onto the internet train. In 2014, the library implemented the new additions of electronic books to provide a different source of learning for the students. The library's 172 ebook consisted of a wide variety of books that would be necessary for all of the English classes of Buena (Miller 1). With the introduction of ebooks, it allowed students to be able to read on their phone anytime and anywhere. In addition, with the help of more funding the program can hopefully add more ebooks in the future.

 Troy Dumais

A former Buena High School student Troy Dumais became a bronze medalist in the 2012 London Olympics. Troy won a bronze medal for Team USA in the men's synchronized 3-meter springboard diving. Troy and his 4 siblings hold most of the records at Buena. When he was a junior at Buena, he accumulated 701.65 points to break his brother Justin's score of 692.15. The only other sibling to make it to the Olympics was his brother Justin.  In an interview with the Ventura County Star, Troy Dumais said, "I haven't done any diving since the Olympics, and I was off on the board a little bit, but I just wanted to enjoy diving with my brothers. They pushed themselves and did well" (Citation Needed).

"Buenas stadium field experiences some updates."

On July 5, 2014, construction on the new and improved Buena field began. According to Buenas principal at the time, Mike Irving, this new and improved field cost half a million dollars, which was all paid for by Ventura Unified School District. The new field replaced the previous field of the last prev. 8 years, it now features a vibrant bulldog laid out across the 50-yard line as well as the word ¨ Bulldog ¨ printed boldly in the end zones and both sidelines of the field. Mr. Irving said ¨ I am very satisfied.¨ This new turf is expected to serve the Bulldog's football and soccer teams for the next 10 years.

 "RIP CDC"

Many students after returning to school were shocked to find that the career center has been demolished and a court yard in its place. Though it's not gone it received a whole new makeover, to something brand new. This new building is a huge ungraded from the last worn building, although yes it was bigger, it experienced a lot of moisture which caused mold and overall wear and tears from its old age. When a group of students was asked about the new courtyard, they responded, ¨ it's so much better than before. instead of having to go off campus to get lunch all the time, we like staying around and hanging out here.¨ As well as teachers, most can agree that this is indeed a beautiful addition to our campus.

   New Healthy Choices

There has been an increase in healthy food choices at Buena cafeteria. Just recently Buena was recognized by the united stated department of agriculture (USDA) for its leadership role in implementing a healthier school nutrition environment. The Ventura Unified School District has decided to make a difference by stepping up to the "HealthierUS School Challenge," This program has created a healthier school environment through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity. Buena has a new school menu, which is healthier and more nutritious for the students. As Buena has made a step up in the right direction, the USDA has given us a bronze-level award and has recognized us as one of 4,317 schools certified with this special award.

School Budget

Since the economic fallout of 2008, education's financial problems seem to be becoming grimmer. Due to both Washington and Sacramento facing daunting financial deficits, some of the first things to be cut in the budget are schools. Ventura Unified School District received $761 per student from the federal government for the 2010-2011 school year, down from the $842 per student of the 2008-2009 school year. The 2012-2013 school year has also been reduced due to inflated cuts in the budget. According to an editorial in the Ventura County Star, the total budget for the district is approximately $120 million, and has lost 25 million dollars in the last 4 years. Our principal Dr. Vaca further explained, "What people need to understand about the budget is that they need to be informed. want to make sure that we're all clear that there are two different types of funds: Maintenance funds for buildings and infrastructure and funds for books and personnel. The books and personnel are depleted. There is nothing there... you can see right outside now the paint is falling off, falling apart. This is our home, we need to feel good about it, it needs to be maintained."
