1965-1969
~Narrative~
High School students during the years 1965-1969 faced many challenges and hard times. While going to school in the years 1965-1969, there was much fear of the Soviet Union because the Vietnam war was active at the time. Some people were even being drafted to war. During the entirety of the years 1965-1969, women weren't allowed to wear pants or shorts, and men were required to have a breast pocket on their shirts (Vaughn). If they weren't properly following the dress code, they’d be automatically sent home.
Several different events happened during these years as well. Throughout the years 1965-1969, Buena had an annual event called “Slave Days.” "Slave days" seems like a poor choice of words and the way it was done would never be allowed today. That being said, there was no ill intent behind this event. It was simply a fundraiser for the school, where girls could donate money by nominating boys whom they could "purchase" in order to help carry their books, get their lunch, and wear different "silly" outfits ("Bidding Begins Bargains Slaves Start Sweating!"). In fact, Buena is not the only school that had this event, other high schools across the country had their own “Slave Days” as well, but these events would eventually fall out of favor.
In 1966, Buena offered a class to seniors for the first time called American Nationalities. The class was designed to make students more aware of racial prejudices and the problems of minority groups in America during that time ("Nationality Sparks Discussion").
In 1967, a city-wide Dress Code Committee was formed. There was concern regarding the dress code regulations, not only at Buena but all over the city ("City-Wide Dress Code Committee Formed").
In 1968, the movement to close the Buena High school campus grew bigger than ever. Mrs. John D. Tindle (the representative of the local residents at the time) said that the major violations by the high-schoolers were: littering, failure to observe pedestrian laws, use of foul language, over-affection, and cars being parked off-campus ("Litter Problems Result In Severe Action").
In 1969, residents of the city became increasingly annoyed with the behavior of Buena students. Because of this, some things were shut down. For example, Telegraph Road was placed off-limits to Buena High School students, and if any students were caught in these off-campus areas, they wouldn’t be permitted to leave the campus during the day for the rest of the school year; in some cases, they would be suspended ("Closed Campus Movement Reaches Students"). These are just some of the bigger events that happened from 1965 to 1969 at Buena.
