From the time Buena High School was first established, there have been a lot of changes, but there have also been a lot of things that have stayed the same. Specifically looking at the years 1995-1999, there were a lot of different activities going on at the school that we do not have at Buena today. One of the main things that happened in the state of California that directly affected Buena High School was Measure M. In the October 1998 Issue of Buena Speaks, the authors Dyani Loo and Brandon Janes wrote about what Measure M was and how it would affect Buena. They wrote about how Buena High School was planning on using the money from the measure, the school planned on using the money to upgrade the technology on campus, “TV and computer monitors were funded by the bond and are being added to classrooms,” (Loo and Janes). According to this issue of Buena Speaks, Measure M opened up a lot of major opportunities to advance Buena High School technologically. Along with the technological advancements during the time period 1994-1999, Buena High School sports, specifically girls basketball, were having incredible seasons. According to the December 1996 Issue of Buena Vista, author Jon Flam wrote about the incredible record the girl's basketball team had built. In this article, Flam wrote about Coach Vaughan’s thoughts towards the team, quoting him with, “Our number one goal right now is to win the league.” As we know, Coach Vaughan led the girl's basketball team to gain the great reputation they had from 1995-1999.
Along with organized sports, Buena High School also held different intramural sporting events, such as the Wiffle Ball Tournament in January 1995. According to the January 1995 Issue of the Buena Vista, the team, Lubricated Cheerios, were the winners of this Wiffle ball tournament, defeating the other seven teams involved in the tournament. According to Lisa Skercevic, “The tournament was held at lunch and two games were played each day except for in the finals when the championship game was played,” (Skercevic). Skercevic wrote that the tournament was created to raise money, but the students who held the tournament only made about $15.19, so it ended up being just for fun. One of the main things that has stayed the same from 1995-1999 to the current day is teacher-of-the-month. According to the first Issue of November 1996, on the front page author Joel Levin named Mr. Hyde as “teacher of the month.” The newspaper changed its name from Buena Vista to Buena Speaks in the fall of 1998. From looking through the school newspapers from the years 1995-1999, it seems that teacher of the month has been a recurring theme, which we, as current students of Buena, know is still happening.

April Fools!
As seen in the article here, April Fools articles released on the April 1st Buena Vista newspapers were fun little jokes the Buena Journalism class would play on the school. This one was tricking the school body that Buena’s accreditation was graded an F+ and all the students would have to retake their classes.

Super Duper Kyle
Kyle Loughman was someone who made an impact on & off the field, and was someone who people may have looked up to. He was labeled as well-rounded, popular, and athletic, and if we take a look into the years he went to Buena (which was 1996-2000) we can see why. As a student, Kyle became the “Boy’s State Representative'' as a junior. One does not earn this position by mere luck, it has to be earned. Because of his intelligence, and personable attributes, teachers and staff nominated him for the position. He was said to be a “Top Individual ' by Mr. Morgan, who oversaw the choosing of the ‘Boys State Representative’. “I think he’s one of our most well-rounded students I've seen in a long time," said Mr. Morgan. According to Athletic Director Joe Vaughan, “He’s a sharp individual and he does a great job in the classroom. He’s very verbal and strong in leadership."
As we take a stroll to the field, Kyle has made outstanding accomplishments. He started his Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year as Quarterback. As a sophomore on varsity playing Quarterback, he led the dogs to an 8-3 season, winning the channel league and advancing to playoffs. During that season, Kyle led the dogs to a victory against Ventura High School. During that time, Buena did not have a stadium, so they played at Larabee Stadium (a.k.a. the home of the Cougars). Buena’s stadium was a dirt field they called “The Pit." The final score of that game was 8-7 in favor of Buena. With about 6,000 people in the stands, Kyle and the dogs completed the full sweep of the Cougars since 1994. This meant all skill levels, Frosh, JV, and Varsity beat the Cougars. Kyle has never lost against Ventura, which is something to be proud of. He won 3 straight league titles for Buena alongside teammates like Cody Murphy and Shane Beck. The life of your Bulldog football players was pretty interesting: play Friday night, probably win, watch film of the game the next morning at 7 am, head to Mcdonalds, and watch youth football play. They would also look forward to reading newspaper articles about themselves and seeing photos of them playing.
During the years 1995-1999, news and reports during this time, outside of school, included events like the OJ Simpson trial and the HIV epidemic (Prinz).
The environment of Buena and Ventura County during this time period was comparatively different from what it is now. From an article written in the Buena Vista newspaper in January 1995, author Brittany Jones shares a story regarding prejudice in the community. She paints scenes of some graffiti and writings on walls full of hate speech that encapsulate the feelings and viewpoints of a few people during this time (Jones). Although this should not account for the entire body of people, it’s acknowledged that there were prominent instances of prejudice that characterized some students’ high school experiences.
