Why Is Democracy So Difficult?/ ATTC

The Wine Shop:

In A Tale of Two Cities, a wine casket is broken and all the wine is spilled into the streets of Paris. "All the people within reach had suspended their business, to run to the spot and drink the wine" (Dickens 31). The people in the streets lived boring lives. When the casket was broke, it brought a change. Everyone got a glimpse of it, and wanted more. The wine casket itself represents the government and how it treated the peasants and the wine inside represents the blood that will be spilled as the government falls apart and the peasants revolt. "A shrill sound of laughter and of amused voices-voices of men, women, and children-resounded in the streets while this wine game lasted" (Dickens 32). After the peasants revolt they are happy because they are free and can change their social status above peasant.

This represents the wine casket that was broken and the peasants desire for change of government.
