Altered book

I chose the book “The Dream Carrier”. When Liesel found it the book reminded her of Max and his dreams of Hitler, and the guilt of putting them in danger(because he was a Jew) but most importantly, the strong friendship that they strengthen and bond over the time Max is there. One day, Liesel brought some snow into the basement for his daily weather report. Liesel notices that Max really wants to go outside, so she brings the outside to him. Max becomes very ill because of the cold basement. Liesel thinks it's her fault and knows it's up to her to help Max. Using her grand powers of words and friendship, she tries to help Max from his sickness. She reads him the Dream Carrier while he is sick. Finally Max woke up and Liesel knew she gave Max hope and power to keep death away. Once Max was awake he felt guilty that Liesel was risking her life to help him and how she read to him all the time.

In my project I focused on how no matter what got in their way, Max and Liesel’s friendship would be there. So I used a quote from the section. “They breathed German and Jewish lungs.” this is showing how even though they are technically enemies, they breath the same air and believe in the same things like how Hitler is mean. I used watercolors because they are very bright and represents Liesel’s hope and efforts to keep Max safe and alive. Also they blend well together as do Max and Liesel’s personalities. The holding hands represents Max and Liesel’s bond that is unbreakable through any politics or fear. The next page I used a cut out to show Max and Hitler fighting while Liesel is watching. The reason I have Liesel watching is because she is so close to Max that in his dream he saw Liesel and she wanted to help. Max isn't just fighting Hitler, he also fighting his guilt of putting Liesel in danger by staying there and almost costing her whole family their lives by almost being caught by death. I also made a cut out because I thought it would look cool like they were in space and were all alone in “the ring” (But cutting a thick book is hard). Finally the title page has “dreamy colors” that remind me of a dream.

This is supposed to look like the actual cover of the book because of how the water colors look like a dream (kind of)

This page is a cut out of Max and Hitler fighting in Max's dream. Liesel is there because she know what its like to have Hitler take her family away

The hands represent the friendship of Liesel and Max

The quote shows how Liesel and Max, despite their differences, are still best friends
