A-G requirements are the subject area requirements to apply for a 4 year California public university. Each letter represents a subject like English, Math, Science, etc. Student must complete a minimum number of years in a specific areas in order to apply. Parents and students must monitor courses they are enrolling in throughout the four year high school experience to be sure they are enrolling in A-G approved courses. For example, most pre-algebra courses are not A-G approved, so if a student starts their freshmen year with pre-algebra, they must be sure to complete three more years of A-G approved math courses in order to apply senior year.
Middle school students should not worry about A-G requirements since this is tracked on high school transcripts but it good for students and families to start becoming familiar with what they are so they have a four year plan once they arrive to high school. Additionally, middle school students should focus their efforts on developing strong academic skills, and social emotional skills to cope with the more rigorous demands. To be well prepared, every middle schoo student should strive to maintain a 3.0 GPA every quarter to be well prepared in high school.
